Representing Vienna’s burgeoning culinary scene, Lingenhel is a new multifunctional space restored by local interior design firm Destilat to reflect its former glory as a 220-year-old heritage-listed manor house. Having presided over some of the city’s most exciting restaurants including Pohl am Nashmarkt, Johannes Lingenhel has launched an urban food workshop, as he likes to call it, that combines cheese production and maturing cellars with a tasting bar and a gourmet boutique.

Lingenhel’s cavernous spaces host a food shop, a restaurant, a bar, a private dining space and a cookery school while a see-through working cheese factory located intentionally in the residence’s former stables puts cheese-making at the centerpiece exposing all aspects of the ripening process.

Inside Lingenhel a feeling of authenticity is underlined by the extensive use of cubically stacked wooden beams reminiscent of the building’s historic roof truss while wire-mesh chandeliers designed by Rick Tegelaar create artificial shafts of light and shadows and accentuate the rhythm of arched entryways and windows throughout the spaces.

Striving to create a place with strong identity that celebrates the scratches and crevices of time, Destilat studio incorporated Victorian cast-iron details, Austrian terrazzo tiles as well as wood and granite features to develop a natural “patina” and stamp its own mark on this historic 19th century manor house.
