*사색을 위한 오두막 [ INVISIBLE STUDIO ] LONG DROP

The Long Drop is a no-cost, no-impact composting toilet made for and by Invisible Studio to serve their woodland studio. It was made entirely from scavenged or waste material, and cost nothing to build, and forms part of a group of research projects conducted by the Studio.

The studio has an interest in rethinking the process of design, and the Longdrop was designed and constructed with no drawings - the only drawings were produced retrospectively. The toilet was designed around available material. The studwork, battens and sheet material were all left over from other projects, and are of varying sizes. The poles were cut on site, and braced with offcuts from the steel black bar bracing used on out studio. The flashing piece at the ridge was left over from when we built ‘Moonshine’ close by, and the polycarbonate for the door and the black fibre cement tiles were scavenged from skips.

The principle of the toilet is that solids and urine are separated just below the seat. The urine is captured at ground level via a drainpipe, and will be used as fertilizer, as it contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The solids are captured via a series of stacked (donated) wheelie bins, and will be used as fertilizer once left for 12 months.
