Berlin-based architecture studio Barkow Leibinger carried out the design of 3400-sq-m of additional manufacturing facilities for a leading high-tech company in Hettingen, a charming village in the southwestern part of Germany.

Though the factory is nestled in the heart of beautiful landscapes, its design – boasting clean and crisp lines – smoothly frees and distinguishes itself from its picturesque setting.

The roof comprises a series of ridges with dual pitches and integrates natural systems. The north-facing surfaces are glazed in order to admit natural light deep into the factory. Holding a production hall and flexible office and working spaces, the steel-framed building follows an efficient and straightforward organisation.

While creating a rhythm across its long facade, an angular glass and corrugated-metal surface allows for the structure to relate to a more suitable scale for the area, as it clearly recalls the neighbouring single-family houses. The German–American practice managed to stage a coherent dialogue between the industrial coldness and elegant severity of such a building with its natural surroundings. The factory creates a new landscape which succeeds in promoting a beneficial synergy between natural and built environments.
