El sistema de plataformas es lo que subyace a la idea del proyecto, el punto de partida. La presencia de éstas es perceptible desde el nivel superior de la terraza y desde el inferior del jardín. Las vistas, los cortes, los voladizos y los recorridos acentúan la horizontalidad. La composición geométrica y espacial, los materiales y la relación con el sitio evocan inevitablemente al Pabellón de Barcelona de Mies van der Rohe situado en la ladera opuesta de la misma colina.

El sitio, la colina de Montjuïc, y su ambigüedad de promontorio que da al mar, ha condicionado y al mismo tiempo evocado sugestiones que están presentes en el proyecto. Dos muros recogen el jardín: uno antiguo, construido casi como una muralla con la típica piedra del Montjuïc, y uno nuevo de pizarra que recubre el volumen del restaurante existente. Es íntimo, es tectónico, sólido por forma y materiales, pero al mismo tiempo en manera discreta abierto hacia el paisaje urbano. El bar al otro lado es liviano, diáfano, abierto completamente hacia la ciudad, transparente por formas y materiales, aunque con la presencia del voladizo que cumple función de brise-soléis, y la presencia del muro ciego que tiende hacia el jardín, llega a trasmitir protección y intimidad. Sobre la ambivalencia y la ambigüedad del lugar, de los materiales, de las sensaciones coge forma este proyecto.

Federico Calabrese (Nápoles 1972), Allessandra Faraone (Nápoles 1977) y Marc Tomas (Barcelona 1970) son los componentes de fondaRIUS arquitecture, que con la experiencia acumulada en grandes despachos de architectura (Lapeña-Torres , MBM Arquitectes , etc.) deciden crear en 2002 su propio despacho de arquitectura, que funciona como una estructura completamente flexible y horizontal.
En los últimos años la oficina se ha presentado en diversos concursos de arquitectura nacionales e internacionales, consiguiendo el primer premio para la rehabilitación del casco antiguo de Torraca (Italia), la Biblioteca Municipal de Pistoia (Italia) y la Plaza Mercaders en Barcelona, entre otros.

Going out on the mountain

Barcelona (SPAIN) Although municipal regulations make building on Montjuic – the mountain between the city and the sea – almost impossible, the Barcelona municipality is nonetheless keen to incorporate this green area into the city’s leisure network. The only way to do so is by re-using and revitalizing existing structures in order to give new initiatives a place. A recent example is the conversion of the Miramar building. It dates from the 1970s and is a well known point of reference in the city, visible from far away. When the restaurant it housed was recently converted into a Chinese one, it was up to the Italian-Portugese team of Federico Calabrese, Fabio Ferone and Joana Carvalho to safeguard the quality of at least the exterior spaces of the complex and of the transformation of the upper part.
The architects took into account the two completely different ‘faces’ of the site they had to redefine. They turned the higher panoramic level into a maritime deck with a little bar overlooking the Mediterranean and the port, while the lower area is now an intimate garden (with bamboo, of course), between the rear facade of the restaurant and the rocky ‘retaining wall’ of the hill. The ambivalence of the genius loci (‘high up on the mountain’ or ‘in the shelter of the slopes’) is reflected by the tectonics of the used materials: the light steel and glass construction of the bar and the teak wood of the platform relate to the sea and the sky while the slate stone of the walls and the square platforms in the garden breathe earthly solidity.
The design connects with the styling of other modern bars and restaurants in the area: eclectic and informally elegant. The detailing, though, was inspired by an older ‘modern’ building and another major Montjuic attraction: Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona pavilion. (Sander Laudy)
