Susie Atkinson ] Soho House Berlin

For those for whom luxury, exclusivity and privacy play an important role, you can always be certain of one thing; in their agendas under ‘favorites’ you are sure to find the name ‘Soho House’. It is a name that has been linked for those who have access, with good food, ambience, lounging Sundays and roof top pools and for those who don’t, with a quest to find a way to get in to this world of privileges. Originally founded in 1995 as a private members’ club for film and media types, now it is a worldwide chain of restaurants, private cinemas, clubs, boutique hotels and brasseries.

Completed in May 2010, the 40 room Soho House Berlin is hosted in the historic 1928' building in Torstrasse, a late Bauhaus structure located in the heart of the Mitte district. Eagerly anticipated by Berlin’s buzzing elite, its opening it did not disappoint with its black and white tiled flooring throughout, oversized seating, fireplaces, club floor, rooftop swimming pool and panoramic views of the Mitte district.

The interior design of the building is collaboration between Soho House’s in-house designer Susie Atkinson and the newly commissioned Michaelis Boyd Associates (Tim Boyd and Alex Michaelis). This team work has successfully brought a sense of the old Berlin lifestyle into the rawness and nakedness of today where exposed concrete beams are combined with traditional paneling to create this marriage of two styles.

Our favorite feature in this hotel is their signature room. This is none other then the 30 seat private hire-screening library. The night here starts at the library for a good old fashion cocktail/socializing and then the doors to the cinema open for the privileged crowd to enjoy. Guests then go on to the ‘Red Room’, a boutique disco with a daily changing program so that no night is ever the same. On the upper levels running from the 3rd – 6th floor the 40 bedrooms are reminiscent of the nostalgia of the early days that have gone by. The 1930’s & 40’s decoration presented through fabric tones, unique furniture pieces,  deco lighting and old world sanitary ware is certainly a successful one. However, the true trademark of the past is simply stated through the free standing bath in the bedroom complete with a lady blowing away the bubbles while her one leg is elevated in a most statuesque manner.

So yes, Soho House has definitely arrived in Berlin, Germany, with no inhibitions or reservations and every one wants a taste of it.

>> Berlin is an incredible city filled with an incredible vibe – for me it’s just an exciting place to be. This building struck me immediately as a place that we could create a Soho House – its history and substance have allowed us to do everything we wanted within the space. I hope that this will be a place where our members can meet, can talk, can swim, can just have fun - but also be place that connects our hotel guests with that same exciting Berlin that I have discovered <<
