주차장이 공원이 되기까지
에드먼턴 도심, 빠르게 변모하는 웨어하우스 캠퍼스 지구에 새로운 공공의 자리가 열렸다. 한때 아스팔트로 뒤덮인 노상 주차장이던 땅이 활기를 머금은 오데이민 공원으로 바뀐 것이다. 에드먼턴시가 의뢰한 이 공원은 낮은 밀도의 산업 부지를 밀도 높은 복합 주거 커뮤니티로 이끄는 전환의 촉매가 된다. 공원과 그 안의 파빌리온은 도심 생활을 떠받치고 지역의 정체성을 세우려는, 눈에 잘 띄는 초기 공공 투자다. 동시에 새로운 공공 영역이 어떤 수준이어야 하는지를 도시에 처음으로 내보이는 선언이기도 하다.

붉은 볼트, 공원의 방향을 잡다
gh3*가 설계한 오데이민 공원 파빌리온은 화장실과 창고 같은 필수 기반시설을 담으면서도 동시대의 랜드마크로서 강렬한 존재감을 드러낸다. 대담하게 부풀어 오른 기하학적 볼트 지붕과 외피 전체를 감싼 짙은 붉은색은, 공원에 들어선 사람이 가장 먼저 눈을 두는 기준점이 된다. 멀리 도심의 유리 마천루를 배경으로 둔 채 낮게 물결치는 붉은 곡선은, 넓은 공원 한가운데에서 방문객의 발걸음을 자연스럽게 끌어당긴다. 열리고 투명한 몸으로 파빌리온은 긴 시선을 안으로 들이고, 사람들이 서로를 지켜보는 자연스러운 감시(passive surveillance)를 가능케 한다. 그렇게 읽기 쉽고 환대하며 안전하게 느껴지는 공공의 장소가 빚어진다.

오데이민, 심장열매라는 이름
붉은색은 공원의 이름에서 왔다. '오데이민(O-day'min)'은 아니시나베 말로 '딸기' 또는 '심장열매(heartberry)'를 뜻한다. 지역 원로 테레사 스트로베리가 선물한 이 이름은 따뜻함과 모임, 그리고 이 땅에 면면히 이어져 온 문화의 연속성을 품는다. 색은 단순한 외장 마감이 아니라 장소의 정체성을 압축한 언어인 셈이다. 공원의 한복판에 놓인 딸기 모양의 잔디밭에서부터 파빌리온의 붉은 외피에 이르기까지, 원주민의 기억은 풍경 곳곳에 촘촘히 짜여 들어가 있다.

처마가 만든 또 하나의 방

낮에는 풍경, 밤에는 등불
낮의 파빌리온은 풍경의 가볍고 투명한 연장처럼 읽힌다. 유리 너머로 도심의 건물과 하늘이 비치고, 처마 곡선은 주변의 소나무와 키 큰 들풀 사이로 자연스럽게 스며든다. 해가 지면 표정이 완전히 달라진다. 안에서 새어 나온 빛이 붉은 실내를 환하게 물들이고, 파빌리온은 도시의 빛나는 표지가 된다. 붉은 카페 테이블에 둘러앉은 사람들의 실루엣은 유리 벽 안에서 또렷이 떠오른다. 공공의 삶과 함께 나누는 공간이 지금 이곳에서 살아 있다는 신호를, 파빌리온은 어둠 속에서 환하게 밝힌다.

270제곱미터에 담은 일상
270제곱미터의 단정한 규모 안에 파빌리온은 일상에 꼭 필요한 것들을 알차게 담는다. 누구나 쓸 수 있는 화장실과 창고, 관리 공간, 그리고 지역 프로그램과 매점, 행사를 위한 다목적실이 그 안에 자리한다. 건물의 자리와 형태는 더 큰 공원의 공간 논리와 구조 질서에서 곧바로 도출되었고, 공원과 파빌리온은 하나로 짜인 설계 체계로 구상되었다. 주 출입구와 모임 공간은 공원의 중심 광장인 워밍 존(Warming Zone)을 마주 본다. 덕분에 방문객은 별다른 안내 없이도 직관적으로 방향을 잡고, 자연스럽게 한자리에 모여든다. 안으로 들어서면 붉게 물들인 합판이 벽과 천장을 따라 곡면을 그리며 흐르고, 매끈하게 연마한 콘크리트 바닥이 그 아래로 차분하게 펼쳐진다. 오래 쓰기 위한 설계

Located in downtown Edmonton's rapidly evolving Warehouse Campus district, O day'min Park transforms a former surface parking lot into a vibrant new public space. Commissioned by the City of Edmonton, the park helps catalyze the neighbourhood's transition from low-intensity industrial lands into a dense, mixed-use, residential community. The park and its pavilion represent early, highly visible public investments intended to establish identity, support downtown living, and signal a new standard for the public realm.

The O day'min Park Pavilion, designed by gh3*, delivers essential infrastructure through the expressive presence of a contemporary landmark. Its bold geometric vaulted roof and complete deep-red exterior create an immediate point of orientation within the park. The colour references the park's name - O-day'min, meaning "strawberry" or "heartberry" in Anishinaabe - a name gifted by local Elder, Theresa Strawberry, signals warmth, gathering, and cultural continuity within the landscape. Open and transparent, the pavilion reinforces long views and passive surveillance, shaping a public place that feels legible, welcoming, and safe. An expanded architectural canopy extends beyond the enclosed program, forming a generous sheltered outdoor room that supports gathering, pause, and yearround activity. By day, the pavilion reads as a light,permeable extension of the landscape. By night, it becomes a luminous civic marker - a visible signal of public life and shared space.

Compact at 270 square metres, the pavilion provides essential amenities including universal washrooms, storage, maintenance space, and a multipurpose room for community programming, concessions and events. Its footprint and geometry are derived directly from the spatial and structural logic of the larger park, conceived as a cohesive design system. The primary entrance and gathering space face the park's central plaza - known as the Warming Zone - strengthening intuitive orientation and creating a natural point of convergence.

The pavilion's vaulted roof amplifies its civic presence, extending coverage to approximately 400 square metres and transforming a small building into a space of urban scale. The form recalls the celebratory character of historic park pavilions while subtly referencing Edmonton's modernist architectural lineage through a contemporary reinterpretation of the barrel vault.

Sustainability is embedded in the design through a high performance building envelope, deep roof overhangs that reduce solar gain, and electric heating that positions the pavilion for future low-carbon operation. Wood framing is used wherever feasible to balance material efficiency and constructability.

More than an architectural object, the pavilion is part of a broader act of urban repair. The conversion of paved land into a multi use green space strengthens the relationship between people and land. Indigenous references are woven throughout the park, from the strawberry shaped central lawn to the pavilion's red exterior. 도시의 심장에서
브라질 상파울루의 피녜이로스(Pinheiros) 지구는 역사적 분위기와 활기찬 문화가 공존하는 곳이다. 카르데알 아르코베르데(Cardeal Arcoverde)와 카포테 발렌테(Capote Valente) 두 거리가 만나는 이 중요한 모퉁이에, FGMF Arquitetos가 설계하고 Idea!Zarvos가 개발한 21층 규모의 복합용도 건물 발렌테(Valente)가 서 있다. 주거와 업무가 하나의 덩어리 안에서 입체적으로 얽히는 이 건물은, 상파울루의 고층 스카이라인 속에서도 단번에 눈을 사로잡는 존재다.

볼륨이 말하는 언어
발렌테를 처음 마주하는 순간, 시선은 자연스럽게 건물 전체를 훑어 올라간다. 크림빛 콘크리트로 마감된 직사각형 볼륨들이 크기와 높이를 달리하며 층층이 솟아오른다. 어떤 볼륨은 정면을 향해 앞으로 밀고 나오고, 또 어떤 볼륨은 옆으로 비껴 나와 깊고 선명한 그림자를 드리운다. 오후 햇살 아래 이 요철(凹凸)들이 만드는 명암의 층위는, 단순한 외장 패턴이 아니라 건물이 숨 쉬고 있다는 인상을 준다.

FGMF의 파트너 페르난도 포르테(Fernando Forte)는 "발렌테는 안에서 밖으로 설계됐다"고 밝힌다. 로비에서 올라서면 오피스 층이 이어진다. 각 층은 개방된 넓은 바닥 구조를 기반으로 내부 계단이 한 층 또는 두 층을 더 연결하는 방식이다. 트리플렉스 유닛에서는 메자닌과 통로가 공중을 가로질러 공간을 나누고, 유리 입면을 완전히 열면 돌출된 테라스와 내부가 하나로 이어진다. 층을 오를수록 상파울루의 지붕 풍경이 점점 더 넓게 펼쳐지고, 도시와 건물 사이의 경계가 자연스럽게 흐려진다.

FGMF Arquitetos completes pixelated skyscraper in Brazil

Local studio FGMF Arquitetos has completed a mixeduse building in São Paulo made of stacked "protruding rectangular volumes" that contain multi-level office spaces and residences on the top floor.

At 21 storeys high, the Valente building was developed by Idea!Zarvos.

The firm worked with FGMF Arquitetos on a previous building in 2016, which explored atypical office layouts and helped to inform the design of Valente, according to the team.

The building is located in "the heart" of São Paulo's Pinheiros district, known for its historic character and cultural attractions, such as nightlife and restaurants.

"Valente was designed from the inside out," said FGMF partner Fernando Forte.

"Idea!Zarvos' concept was based on a threedimensional occupation of corporate space, with triplex and duplex units that allow spatial arrangements very different from those typically found in the market, highly adaptable to occupants' needs."

"Due to balcony regulations and the intention to create varied layouts, the building's distinctive volumetry emerged, with deeply worked volumes and window frames that define the corner."

The building's volume is based on the concept of "rectangles with single or doubleheight ceilings, projecting forward" to create balconies, according to the studio.

It contains a groundfloor lobby, a stack of triplex apartments and duplex apartments in the middle, and two residential floors at the top. The eighteenth floor features a greenspace, while the upper levels also contain space for a future restaurant.

At the ground level, the building is set back to provide additional sidewalk space at its "important corner" in São Paulo, which sits at the intersection of Cardeal Arcoverde and Capote Valente streets.

Its rectangular volumes then stretch upwards in a variety of sizes and dimensions, with terraces hanging over both street facades, while the back two facades are flat.

The wide open glazed pockets of each volume "sometimes open as awning windows, sometimes as sliding windows", according to the studio, and each are lined with thin, wooden mullions.

The volumes are also topped with planters, with landscape design by Rodrigo Oliveira, that will contain large trees.

The rest of the building is clad in small white tiles.

Inside, the lobby is narrow, with stone tiles cladding one wall. A yellow couch is placed to the side, while a front desk leads to an access door to the floors above.

The office floors are wide open and contain staircases that lead to either one or two additional floors, depending on the layout.

Mezzanines and walkways pass through the office levels, while the glass facades can be opened or lead onto the protruding terraces.

"Our intention with Valente was to create a place where people could live, work, and move around with greater ease," said Idea!Zarvos founding partner Otavio Zarvos.

대지 위의 나비
마라케시 아멜키스 골프코스 인근, 붉은 흙과 야자수 사이에 한 채의 빌라가 서 있다. 모하메드 아민 시아나가 설계한 빌라 버터플라이는 그 이름처럼 하나의 이미지에서 시작되었다. 대지를 처음 방문한 날, 건축가의 눈앞을 스쳐 지나간 나비의 잔상. 번데기는 보호하고, 나비는 날아오른다. 이 단순한 이치가 빌라 전체의 설계 원리가 된다.

외피: 도시를 향해 닫힌 집
거리에서 바라본 빌라는 과묵하다. 테라코타 빛 마감재가 마라케시의 전통적인 흙빛 황토 톤을 그대로 이어받은 외벽은 두껍고 평탄하며, 아가베와 올리브 나무가 그 앞에 낮게 자리를 잡는다. U자형으로 구성된 외피는 거리를 향해 의도적으로 내향한다. 세로 루버를 품은 좁은 개구부만이 내부의 존재를 암시할 뿐이다. 이 집은 도시의 시선으로부터 스스로를 닫는다. 그것은 완강한 거부가 아니라 번데기의 단단한 껍질처럼, 안을 지키기 위한 선택이다.

아치: 비상하는 구조
후면으로 돌아서면 집은 전혀 다른 얼굴을 드러낸다. 노출 콘크리트 위에 반달형 아치가 연속으로 뚫려 있고, 그 너머로 골프코스의 초록과 아틀라스 산맥의 능선이 한 폭의 그림처럼 담긴다. 건축가는 이것을 "절제된 투명성"이라 부른다. 완전히 열리지도, 완전히 닫히지도 않는 상태. 아치의 강철 프레임과 대형 유리는 내부와 외부 사이에 막을 치는 동시에, 그 막을 통해 풍경을 실내로 불러들인다. 황혼이 깔리면 수영장 수면은 아치의 실루엣을 조용히 반사하고, 집 전체가 물 위에서 날아오를 듯 가볍게 떠오른다.

내부: 마라케시의 코스모폴리탄 정신
그 안으로 발을 들이면 집은 비로소 자신의 본모습을 펼친다. 빌라 버터플라이는 단순한 주거가 아니다. 넓은 접견 공간, 하맘(전통 욕실), 게스트 스위트, 그리고 전문가급 주방이 하나의 지붕 아래 공존한다. 이 집은 모이는 곳으로 설계되었다.

실내 공간은 마라케시의 복합적인 문화 지층을 그대로 담는다. 머스터드 옐로의 유기적 곡선 소파와 코냑 색 가죽 좌석이 공존하고, 그 위로 황동 펜던트 조명이 군집을 이루며 금빛 무게감을 내려보낸다. 아르 데코의 정제된 감각, 당대 디자인의 대담함, 그리고 모로코 공예의 손길이 한 공간 안에서 층을 이루며 교차한다. 젤리주 모자이크는 단색으로 절제하고, 현지 흙과 짚, 안료는 마라케시 고유의 흙빛 황토 톤을 지킨다. 과거의 언어를 가져오되, 그것을 현재의 문법으로 다시 쓴다.

이원성: 뿌리와 개방성 사이

Near Marrakech's Amelkis golf course, Villa Butterfly takes inspiration from a fleeting vision of butterflies on site—a metaphor of chrysalis and flight that shaped its design. The project blends Moroccan tradition with an international, contemporary outlook.

Designed by Mohamed Amine Siana, the villa balances protection and openness. A U shaped, introverted façade conceals a lighter structure that unfolds toward the golf course and the Atlas Mountains.

At the back, expansive glazing framed by steel arches creates "controlled transparency," combining intimacy with a sense of openness. Straight, solid lines of the cocoon contrast with soft, Arab-Andalusian-inspired curves, reinforcing the butterfly metaphor.

Conceived as a place for gathering, the villa features reception areas, a hammam, guest suites, and a professional kitchen. Interiors reflect Marrakech's cosmopolitan spirit, where contemporary furniture, Art Deco influences, and Moroccan craftsmanship intersect. Traditional elements such as zellige mosaics are reinterpreted in monochrome, while local earth, straw, and pigments maintain the city's iconic ochre tones.

역사 속에 뿌리내리다
YK Pao School 훙차오 캠퍼스 주변은 역사의 무게를 고스란히 품은 땅이다. 훙차오 국빈관, 서교 국빈관, 쑹칭링 유치원, 사이프러스 호텔, 상하이 동물원이 나란히 이웃한 이 일대는, 도시가 간직해 온 기억의 지층 위에 서 있다. 역사 보존 지침이 일정한 건축적 혁신을 허용하면서도, 새 건물은 반드시 이 맥락과 조화를 이루어야 했다. 낯선 돌출이 아니라 조용한 합류가 요구되는 자리였다.

Scenic Architecture Office는 그 답을 배치 계획에서부터 찾아 들어갔다. 새 건물은 캠퍼스 북동쪽 모서리에 자리를 잡는다. 남서쪽의 본관 교동과 대각선 방향으로 마주보는 이 배치는 북서쪽에 고요한 진입 정원을, 남동쪽에 활기찬 새 운동장을 자연스럽게 나눈다. 조용함과 역동성, 두 성격이 서로를 방해하는 대신 보완하며 공존한다. 마스터플랜의 관점에서 보면 새 건물은 네 개의 대외 접면을 형성한다. 북측과 동측은 역사지구를 향해 열리며 맥락과 대화하고, 서측과 남측은 캠퍼스 안을 향해 닫히며 진입 정원의 고요함과 운동장의 생기를 안으로 담아낸다.

필로티, 운동장을 품다
부지의 협소함은 설계자에게 연속적인 제약을 안겼다. 새 운동장과 직선 주로를 확보한 뒤 남은 지상층 바닥 면적은 고작 약 2,400㎡였다. 허용 최고 높이인 24미터까지 올린다 해도 수영장과 체육관 각각의 순 층고 요구 사항을 충족시키면서 동시에 8,000㎡에 달하는 전체 프로그램을 수용하는 것은 불가능에 가까웠다. Scenic Architecture Office는 이 난제를 수직으로 돌파했다. 건물 전체를 필로티(pilotis — 건물을 지면에서 들어올리는 기둥 구조) 위로 띄워 올리고, 운동장과 직선 주로의 일부가 건물 구조물 아래로 자연스럽게 흘러들어오게 했다.

그 결과는 단순한 구조적 해법을 넘어선다. 잔디 운동장이 건물의 배를 통과하며 실내외의 경계를 흐리고, 새 건물과 캠퍼스 환경의 "삽입(embedding)" 관계는 한층 깊어진다. V자형으로 기울어진 노출 콘크리트 기둥들이 지면에서 뻗어 오르고, 그 사이 공간에서 아이들은 초록빛 잔디 위를 뛰어다닌다. 사선으로 열린 대형 개구부가 필로티 하부 공간을 운동장과 연결하고, 유연하게 곡면을 이루는 초록빛 천장이 그 위를 감싼다. 안도 다다오의 노출 콘크리트가 정적인 무게감으로 말한다면, 이 필로티는 가볍게 땅 위를 부유하면서도 캠퍼스와 굳건히 맞물리는 역동적 언어로 말한다.

경계면이라는 설계 언어
이 부지와의 대화는 설계자에게 하나의 확신을 심어주었다. 이 건물과 주변 환경의 관계를 다루는 핵심 장치는 "경계면(interface)"이라는 것. 경계면은 공간을 나누는 동시에 이어붙인다. 건축과 외부 환경 사이의 통로가 되기도 하고, 서로 다른 내부 공간들 사이의 막이 되기도 한다. 나아가 전통적인 중국 정원의 담장이 지닌 추상적 언어로 기능하며, YK Pao School이 중국 문화와 맺는 유대감을 공간으로 번역해낸다.

이 언어는 입면에서도 선명하게 읽힌다. 따뜻한 베이지 톤의 금속 격자 스크린이 건물 전체를 감싸며 내부와 외부를 동시에 투과한다. 격자 너머로 창문들이 겹쳐 보이고, 빛과 그림자가 리드미컬하게 교차하면서 고정된 형태가 아닌 유동적인 표면을 만들어낸다. 지상층 입면의 물결 모양 아치 창들은 운동장을 향해 부드러운 시선을 열어주고, 황혼 무렵에는 내부의 온기가 밖으로 스며들며 건물 전체가 은은하게 빛난다. 역사지구의 맥락을 존중하면서도 뚜렷한 자신의 목소리를 갖는 외피다.

배움이 만나는 자리
새 건물에 담긴 프로그램은 일반적인 스포츠 시설의 범주를 훌쩍 넘어선다. 실내 수영장, 다목적 농구 코트, 탁구실, 옥상 운동장이라는 체육 공간을 기본으로, 예술·음악·정보통신(ICT)·목공 공방·지능형 로보틱스·패션 디자인·사진 등 특화 STEAMS 교실, 내외부 교원을 위한 교원 연수 센터, 강의실로도 전용 가능한 공동 허브 공간이 층층이 쌓인다. STEAMS란 과학(Science)·기술(Technology)·공학(Engineering)·예술(Arts)·수학(Mathematics)에 지속가능성(Sustainability)을 더한 통합 교육 체계다.

이 복합 프로그램은 학교의 전인교육(全人教育) 철학과 정확히 맞물린다. 수영장에서는 파형 아치 창 너머로 캠퍼스의 버드나무 군락이 물결치듯 보이고, 수면에 반사된 역광이 리브 처리된 목재 천장을 따라 부드럽게 흐른다. 상층부 체육관에는 격자 형태의 채광 시스템이 자연광을 고르게 끌어들여, 인공 조명 없이도 충분히 밝은 운동 공간을 완성한다. 옥상 운동장에서는 상하이 도심의 스카이라인이 사방을 에워싸며, 도시 속 학교라는 맥락을 새삼 환기시킨다. 상층부 허브 공간의 거대한 타원형 스카이라이트는 아래층까지 자연광을 깊숙이 끌어내리고, 목재 수납형 안내 데스크와 유리 파티션 너머로 학생들의 움직임이 층과 층 사이를 부드럽게 연결한다. 어느 자리에 서 있든 서로 다른 배움의 장면들이 시야 안에 겹쳐 들어온다.

Anchor and Embed -The surroundings of the YK Pao Hongqiao Campus host important historical buildings and venues, such as the Hongqiao State Guest House, the West Suburban State Guest House, Soong Ching Ling Kindergarten, the Cypress Hotel, and the Shanghai Zoo. While the historic conservation guidelines allowed for a degree of architectural innovation, the new building had to harmonize with the historic context.

The new building is anchored at the northeastern corner of the campus, forming a diagonal relationship with the main teaching building in the southwest. This layout clearly delineates a tranquil entrance garden to the northwest and a vibrant new sports field to the southeast, allowing the quiet and active external territories to complement each other. From a master plan perspective, the new building naturally establishes four external interfaces: the north and east interfaces face outward, requiring a contextual dialogue with the heritage district, while the west and south interfaces face inward, echoing the serenity of the entrance garden and the vitality of the sports field.

Wreathed by the tightness of the site, further challenges emerged. After deducting the new sports field and the straight sprint tracks, the available ground floor indoor footprint was only about 2,400 square meters. Even if built to the maximum allowable height of 24 meters, it could not simultaneously accommodate the clear height requirements of the swimming pool and sports hall while meeting the overall program demand of 8,000 square meters. Consequently, we decided to expand the upper volume by elevating the building on pilotis, allowing parts of the sports field and tracks to run beneath the building structure. The relationship of mutual "embedding" between the new building and the campus environment was thus further reinforced.

This dialogue with the site made us deeply realize that the "interface" is the core mechanism for handling the relationship between this new building and its environment. It can differentiate spaces while binding distinct scenarios together; it can serve as a link between the architecture and the exterior environment, or as a boundary between different interior spaces; furthermore, it can function as an abstract language of traditional courtyard walls, echoing YK Pao School's connection with Chinese culture. Building our design language around the "interface" became the key to responding to both site and design idea.

Spatial Interface: Separation and Transparency -The school's functional requirements for the new comprehensive building far exceeded those of a conventional sports facility. In addition to the urgently needed indoor swimming pool, multi-functional basketball court, ping-pong room, and rooftop sports field, it had to house a wide array of specialized STEAMS classrooms—including art, music, ICT, a wood workshop, intelligent robotics, fashion design, and photography—as well as a teacher training center serving both internal and external faculty, and a collective hub that could double as a lecture hall. This multifaceted program perfectly aligned with the school's STEAMS pedagogical framework, confirming that the building's core value lay in becoming a spatial vessel that sparks cross-disciplinary teaching, interaction, and creativity.

Conclusion -The design of the Anna Pao Sohmen Centre employs the "interface" as its core architectural language, articulating YK Pao School's philosophy of holistic education while holding an active dialogue with the natural and cultural identity of the site. We believe this building goes beyond meeting the programmatic needs of the Hongqiao Campus; it acts in an imperceptible, ambient way to offer diverse spatial opportunities for the practice of holistic education. It is a place where different disciplines collide, different scenarios interface, and learning transforms into an exploration that spans across borders. Jia Art, a new gallery designed by Foster + Partners, has opened its doors. The building is an integral part of the practice's concept masterplan for the Changfeng mixed use development in Shanghai's Putuo District. Located on the recently completed southern plot of the development, the gallery sits at the intersection of two primary axes and acts as the social heart of the scheme.

Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman, Foster + Partners, said: "Jia Art is a project thatdemonstrates the significance of embedding art and culture in our cities. It will bring life to the publicspaces, nurturing a sense of community identity, while playing an important role in integrating ournew Changfeng development into the wider fabric of Shanghai."

Jia Art features 5000 square meters of flexible exhibition, event, and educational spaces, providing a central location where the local community can gather and exchange ideas. Displaying a mixture of contemporary art and more traditional pieces, the gallery consists of two buildings that are joined by a double height atrium. The north building houses the main exhibition areas, while the south building contains hospitality spaces and additional exhibition spaces, as well as an area for lectures.

The design is inspired by spring blooming flowers found in the local Changfeng park, with the gallery's form emulating four petals. The petals grow from the building's base, curving upwards and outward to create the roof. Natural light enters the gallery's atria and exhibition spaces through a central glass skylight, which integrates seamlessly with the petaloid form.

John Blythe, Senior Partner, Foster + Partners, added: "Drawing on the geometry of a blossoming flower, the gallery is characterised by its curvilinear form that appears to grow outwards from its center. The building's inherent symmetry establishes a sense of calm and balance in this fast-paced city."

The human scale of the gallery works in congruence with the broader development and creates a warm and inviting setting for visitors and locals alike. Its façade features tubular glass ribs that travel vertically up the building, alongside mirror-finished stainless steel curved back panelling. The ribs reflect daylight during the day and can be illuminated at night to create a dynamic and animated profile. Ultra-High Performance Concrete panels on the west facade enhance privacy.

The central atrium is characterised by its striking curved form that echoes the building's exterior. This creates a coherent design language, with the interior architecture resonating with the exterior expression. The exhibition spaces feature a soft, natural colour palette that works in harmony with the petal motif. The Changfeng development exemplifies a 'Live-Work-Play' approach to mixed use urban design, bringing together retail, offices, affordable housing, public facilities, cultural buildings, and recreational areas. Extensive landscaping on the west side of the development will connect with the district's larger green corridor along the river, supporting the project's wellbeing and community focus.

불 이후의 땅
사자바 강이 흐르는 숲 가장자리에, 한때 오두막이 서 있었다. 불이 지나간 뒤 남은 것은 돌뿐이었다. 타다 남은 석조 기단. 그러나 체코의 건축 스튜디오 Mimosa Architects는 그 잔해를 허물지 않았다. 오히려 그것을 토대 삼아, 새로운 오두막을 그 위에 다시 세웠다.

기단을 살린 선택은 단순한 절약이 아니었다. 책임건축가 페트르 모라체크는 이렇게 설명한다. "원래의 석조 기단을 재사용함으로써 새 기초 공사를 피하고, 대지에 대한 개입을 최소화할 수 있었습니다." 기단은 오두막을 홍수 범람선 위로 들어올리고, 강 위를 향한 시선을 확보해 준다. 과거의 흔적이 현재의 구조를 떠받치는 셈이다.

세 가지 자연의 언어
Mimosa Architects가 이 오두막에 부여한 개념은 세 단어로 요약된다. 암석(rock), 강(river), 그리고 불(fire). 대지를 두르는 바위 지형, 낚싯대가 닿을 만큼 가까이 흐르는 강물, 그리고 이 자리를 한번 삼켰던 불. 모라체크는 말한다. "우리는 이 땅의 자연적 요소 각각과 원래 구조물 사이의 연결 고리를 찾고 싶었습니다. 암석, 강, 그리고 불."

이 연결은 자연을 묘사하는 데 그치지 않는다. 사무소가 밝히듯, "이러한 관계야말로 경관을 장기적으로 보전하기 위한 전제 조건"이다. 오두막은 숲에 기대어 서 있으며, 동시에 숲의 일부가 된다.

검은 외피, 살아있는 속
낙엽송을 숯불로 그을려 외피를 입혔다. 석조 기단 위에 단단히 얹힌 이 오두막은 사자바 강변 경사지에 조용히 자리를 잡고 있다. 검게 탄화된 낙엽송 판재는 숲의 어둠 속으로 건물을 녹여 들인다. 모라체크가 말하는 것처럼, "낙엽송을 탄화 처리하면 목재에 내구성이 생기는 동시에, 어두운 외관이 자연 경관을 해치지 않는 이점도 얻게 됩니다."

외관이 전임 건물의 운명을 '다소 냉소적으로' 되새기는 방식이라면, 내부는 정반대의 감각으로 채워진다. 가문비나무 CLT(구조용 집성목) 판재가 바닥부터 천장까지 공간 전체를 덮는다. 벽, 천장, 가구까지 같은 결로 이어지는 연한 나무 빛은 외부의 검은 껍질과 강렬한 대비를 이룬다. 이 대비는 단순한 미적 장치가 아니다. 밖에서는 숲으로, 안에서는 따뜻한 은신처로 기능하는, 오두막 본연의 존재 방식이다.

오두막 전체의 재료와 색채는 군더더기 없이 절제되어 있다. 동굴처럼 은밀하고 아늑한 분위기 속에서, 실내와 실외 사이의 경계는 느슨해진다. 장작 스토브의 흑철 관, 계단과 메시 난간의 날카로운 검정 선이 군데군데 돋보이며, 그것이 CLT의 따뜻한 살색 목재와 맞닿을 때 공간은 비로소 긴장감을 얻는다.

강을 담은 공간
오두막의 주 생활 공간은 1층 전체를 하나의 열린 평면으로 구성한다. 주방, 식사 공간, 거실이 칸막이 없이 이어진다. 이 관대한 개방감은 위층 침실들의 아담한 크기로부터 온다. 모라체크는 "주 공간의 넉넉함은 작은 위층 방들 덕분에 가능합니다. 어차피 도시를 벗어나는 일의 본질은 함께하는 데 있으니까요"라고 말한다.

공간은 오두막의 앞뒤를 하나로 관통하며, 한쪽으로 강을, 반대편으로 절벽을 동시에 품는다. 사자바 강을 향한 쪽 벽면 전체는 유리로 열려 있다. 강변을 따라 길게 이어지는 테라스 역시 강의 기척을 발끝 아래로 전한다. 대형 접이식 셔터가 강렬한 햇살을 조절하고, 필요할 때는 오두막을 "단단히 닫힌 상자"로 변모시킨다.

바닥은 석조 기단의 회색빛과 바깥 바위 지형을 은은하게 참조하는 천연 리놀륨으로 마감했다. 발바닥 아래로 전해지는 서늘하고 매끄러운 감촉이 이 공간이 자연의 연장임을 조용히 상기시킨다.

2층 다락으로 오르는 흑철 계단은 검은 메시 난간과 함께 공간 안에서 가장 선명한 구조적 언어를 구사한다. 다락의 경사 천장 아래로 펼쳐지는 회랑을 걷다 보면, 네모난 창 하나가 숲의 단면을 액자처럼 잘라 보여준다.

오두막의 자립
이 오두막은 전기 공급 외에는 사실상 스스로 살아간다. 대지 안의 우물이 물을 공급하고, 장작 스토브와 현무암 울 단열재, 전기 히터가 온기를 책임진다. 폐수 처리 탱크는 석조 기단 안쪽에 감춰져 있다. 바깥 지붕 뒷면에는 배수와 우수 처리를 위한 내후성 강판이 설치된다.

구조 전체는 천연 재료와 재활용 재료를 기반으로 한다. 불이 앗아간 자리에 다시 세워진 이 오두막은, 파괴의 흔적을 지우는 대신 그것을 품고 살아간다. 검게 탄 외피, 강을 마주하는 유리면, 돌 위에 올라앉은 목재 구조체. 암석과 강과 불 — 이 세 가지 자연의 언어가 78제곱미터 안에서 하나의 건축으로 완성된다.

Burnt wood and black metal define this rural cabin in the Czech Republic, created by local studio Mimosa Architects to replace its scorched predecessor.

Wrapped in blackened larch boards, the 78-square metre cottage is located near Prosečnice on the banks of the Sázava river, and sits on the site of another cabin that burned down.

Mimosa Architects drew from the surrounding nature and the site's position between the river and rocky terrain, designing the cabin to blend in with its forested environment.

"We believe that such a relationship is one of the prerequisites for the long term protection of the landscape," Mimosa Architects principal Petr Moráček told Dezeen.

"The river literally flows within fishing rod reach," he continued.

"With this in mind, we wanted to draw a link between each natural aspect of land and the site's original structure – rock, river and fire."

After the fire, the only remaining feature of the structure was the stone plinth it rested on. This was retained as the base for the new cabin, keeping it elevated from flooding and also giving it views over the river.

The structure is entirely timber-based, primarily using natural and recycled materials.

"Reusing the original stone foundation made it possible to avoid new foundations and minimise interventions in the terrain," said Moráček.

"Charring the larch wood gives the timber a durable quality, and as a plus, its dark facade ensures that the natural scenery is not disturbed."

While the exterior of the cabin is meant to "perhaps somewhat cynically" reference its predecessor, the interior has been made lighter with the use of spruce bio-board, accented with black steel.

Throughout the cottage the material and colour palettes were pared back and minimal, keeping the space uncluttered and "cave-like". Its sparse decor encourages the feeling of free-flowing movement between the indoors and outdoors.

The downstairs level contains the kitchen, dining area and living room in one open plan space, with bedrooms on the first floor.

"The generosity of the main space is enabled by the small upstairs rooms," Moráček explained. "After all, the purpose of going out of the city is to be together."

The cabin's light spruce wood walls, ceilings and furniture are punctuated by hints of black metal from the wood-burning stove, the staircase and in the smaller hardware details.

Grounding the space, the floors are a long lasting natural linoleum that reference the grey of the stone plinth and rocky terrain outside.

The shared space spans the full height of the cabin and connects the front and back of the site, overlooking the river and the cliffs.

"The interior space is essentially just a simple connection between the areas in front of and behind the cabin," said Moráček.

The entire length of the cabin facing the river has been glazed, and a raised terrace running alongside it has views of the Sázava.

A large folding shutter shelters the cottage from strong sunlight, and also gives the house the option to transform into "a closed, impregnable box".

Outside and towards the back of the timber-framed structure, water resistant sheet metal has been installed to facilitate drainage and surface run-off on the roof.

Apart from requiring electricity, the cottage is substantially self-sufficient. An on site well supplies water, the stove, basalt wool insulation and electric heaters are used for warmth, while a wastewater tank sits within the plinth beneath.

The architecture and landscape design work together to place both art and the environment center stage for generations to come. The Hainan Science Museum, designed by Ma Yansong and his firm MAD, has opened to the public on the edge of Wuyuan River National Wetland Park. Since its trial opening, it has welcomed more than 350,000 visitors in four months, with peak days drawing more than 5,800 people. "I wanted the project to be built on the idea of flow and chaos — space, function, and knowledge to flow into one another, freely." says Ma Yansong, Founder and Principal Partner of MAD. "Different subjects should connect, overlap, and stay open. If artificial intelligence can already answer almost any question, a science museum's job is no longer to deliver facts. It is to teach children how to ask them."

On the frontline of China's space ambitions, a museum for the families next door Hainan has quietly become part of China's scientific infrastructure. The country's only coastal spaceport sits on the island's east coast and has carried more than 40 launches since 2016, including missions to the Moon and Mars. The museum, named one of Hainan Province's "Top Ten Public Cultural Facilities," frames science not as a distant subject, but as something already happening in everyday life.

With more than 30 schools and kindergartens within a three kilometer radius, Ma conceived the building from the first sketch as civic infrastructure for the families around it, closer to a public library than a destination landmark.A wide canopy lifts off the ground floor, shading an open plaza beneath the museum and pulling public space under the building itself. Parents wait, students meet, residents pass through on the way home, and the lobby reads less like an atrium than a town square under a roof.

Architecture: One Spiral, Two Journeys, Three Cores At the heart of the project is a single spiralling route that connects every gallery in the museum, walkable in either direction. Visitors who arrive at the top descend through ring-shaped galleries, moving from deep space and the ocean, down through Hainan's rainforests and tropical agriculture, and finally to a hands-on level for children. Those who enter at the ground floor walk the same path in reverse: from touch and play, expanding outward until the cosmos is overhead. Two directions, two readings of the same building. Subjects flow into one another rather than sit behind separate doors, and the order, by Ma Yansong's design, is the visitors to choose.

Structurally, the entire spiral is carried by three concrete core tubes. They eliminate columns from the exhibition floors and lift the ring shaped volume above an open ground level, allowing the building to float over its reflecting pools and the canopy beneath it. The exterior is wrapped in 843 fiber-reinforced polymer panels that form a silver shell shifting with daylight, sky, and weather. The 46,528-square-meter complex also includes a planetarium, a giant-screen cinema, a sunken plaza, and shaded outdoor planting areas for hands-on plant and agriculture education all connected by a covered walkway. It is, in some ways, the question Ma Yansong has been circling for two decades: how does a building stop being a container for content and start being the content itself? The Hainan Science Museum may be his clearest answer yet.

런던 햄스테드(Hampstead)의 레딩턴 & 프로그널 보존 구역(Reddington and Frognal Conservation Area). 이 오래된 동네의 한 가족은 오랫동안 역설 속에 살았다. 집의 지상층 창밖으로는 남향의 넉넉한 정원이 펼쳐져 있었지만, 그 정원은 언제나 1.5미터 아래에 있었다. 긴 계단을 통해서만 닿을 수 있는 거리. 십대 자녀들과 함께 정원에 더 가까이 살고 싶었던 이 가족에게, 그 단차는 단순한 불편함이 아니었다. 기존 주택의 구조로는 해결할 수 없는 단절이었다.

Panoramic House is a minimalist residence located in London, United Kingdom, designed by MATA Architects. Set within the Reddington and Frognal conservation area of Hampstead, the project began with a spatial paradox familiar to anyone who has inherited a period London home: a ground floor that looked out onto a generous south-facing garden while remaining stranded nearly 1.5 metres above it, accessed only by a long flight of stairs. For a family with teenage children seeking a closer relationship with their outdoor space, this elevation was not simply inconvenient, it was a disconnection that the existing house could not resolve on its own terms. MATA Architects treated the lower ground extension less as an addition and more as an act of descent, allowing the new living volume to cascade down into the landscape it was meant to serve.

The site’s natural slope became the generative condition of the design. By dropping the extension floor almost a metre below the original ground level while maintaining a consistent ceiling height, the architects achieved two things simultaneously: increased internal headroom and a threshold condition where the living space meets the garden at an intimate, inhabited scale. This single move also produced subtle spatial zoning within what reads as a single open plan volume, avoiding the flat monotony that often afflicts extensions of this type.

Working within the root protection zones of mature surrounding trees imposed genuine discipline on both footprint and levels. The architects collaborated with arboriculturists to calibrate the building’s reach, and the resulting geometry carries the imprint of that negotiation. It is the kind of constraint that, handled well, produces specificity rather than compromise.

The defining gesture is a glazed corner that opens the extension toward the garden without structural interruption. Large format sliding panels from Maxlight meet at the corner, and in their open position dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape entirely. This is where the project engages a lineage stretching from Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House through Craig Ellwood’s Case Study experiments, the ongoing question of how to hold up a roof while making the wall disappear. MATA resolves it in favour of the garden, using the panoramic view as both spatial device and organising principle.

두 볼륨의 대화 — 땅과 하늘 사이

내화(耐火), 건축의 논리 속으로
이 집에서 화재 대비는 사후에 덧붙인 안전장치가 아니다. 건축의 논리 그 자체에 녹아들어 있다. 코르텐 강재 외피와 함께, 불씨 차단 슬라이딩 스크린과 외부 데크 스프링클러가 복사열과 날아드는 불씨의 위협을 차단한다. 주택은 태양광 발전과 샘물, 보조 수력 발전을 결합해 외부 인프라 없이 완전히 자립한다. 재난 이후의 재건이 단순한 복원이 아니라, 더 높은 차원의 자립으로 거듭난 것이다.

안으로 들어서며 — 소재의 온도
외부의 산업적 감각은 내부로 자연스럽게 이어진다. 노출 콘크리트와 강재가 절제된 소재 팔레트를 형성하지만, 단단함 위로 온기가 스며든다. 원목 마루와 목재 루버 천장, 북유럽 모더니즘 정서의 가구들이 차가움을 거둔다. 인테리어는 스스로를 낮춘다. 사방의 유리창 너머로 산과 계곡의 풍경이 거침없이 밀려들 수 있도록.

층위의 공간 — 위와 아래
상층에서는 개방형 거실과 주침실이 덮인 데크로 열린다. 슬라이딩 유리 스크린을 밀어내면 계곡을 가득 담은 조망이 거침없이 펼쳐진다. 지형 속으로 반쯤 파고든 하층에는 넓은 스튜디오가 자리하고, 그 공간은 하부 테라스로 이어진다. 두 개의 침실과 작업실, 사우나가 옆으로 늘어서며 사적인 영역을 구성한다. 후면에서는 천창이 깊은 내부로 빛을 끌어들여, 반지하 특유의 무거움을 걷어낸다.

대지의 반영 — 풍경과 건축의 합일
주택 아래편 연못에는 집의 실루엣이 잔잔히 담긴다. 코르텐의 녹청과 소나무 숲의 그림자가 수면 위에서 하나로 녹아드는 그 순간, 이 건물이 대지와 맺고자 한 관계가 고스란히 드러난다. 파인 플랫 주택은 재난 이후의 건축이 무엇을 말할 수 있는지 조용히 증명한다. 땅에 새겨진 콘크리트 흔적을 버리지 않고, 녹슨 강재로 대지의 색을 입고, 해와 샘물로 스스로를 부양하는 이 집은 마야카마스의 산세 속에 단단히 뿌리를 내린다. 풍경 속으로 사라지려는 것이 아니라, 풍경과 동등한 무게로 나란히 서 있는 것이다.

When the 2019 Kincade Fire destroyed the original off grid house on this remote plot in the Mayacamas Mountains northeast of Healdsburg, California, the owners chose to rebuild on their own terms. Designed by San Francisco-based Faulkner Architects, Pine Flat residence is a quietly assured structure that draws on the rugged character of its wildland setting while confronting, head-on, the realities of building in fire-prone terrain. Clad in fire-resistant Corten steel, the house reads as both a measured architectural statement and a pragmatic act of resilience.

The two-storey house unfolds as a dialogue between old and new. Rather than starting anew, the architects retained ninety per cent of the existing concrete foundations, which now anchor the half buried lower volume, partially absorbed into the hillside’s natural contours. This concrete base becomes a plinth for the cantilevered upper volume, its rectilinear form tracking the ridgeline. Clad in fire-resistant Corten steel, its weathering patina lends the structure an earthy hue that allows it to settle more seamlessly into the landscape. A smaller, adjoining volume accommodates the garage, while the entry porch, wedged between the two, doubles as an al fresco dining area.

Fire resilience is embedded within the building’s logic rather than appended as an afterthought. Alongside the Corten shell, sliding ember screens and exterior deck sprinklers mitigate the threat of radiant heat and airborne embers. The house operates entirely off-grid, supported by solar power, spring-fed water, and supplementary hydroelectric generation.

The architecture’s industrial sensibility carries seamlessly into the interiors. Exposed concrete and steel establish a restrained material palette, softened by natural wood, from hardwood floors and timber lined ceilings to a furniture selection that leans towards warm Scandinavian modernism. The effect is deliberately understated, allowing the landscape, framed in every direction through expansive glazing, to take precedence.

On the upper floor, the open-plan living area and primary bedroom extend onto a covered deck through floor-to ceiling sliding glass screens, opening up expansive, unhurried views across the valley. Below, the partially buried concrete level houses a generous studio that spills onto a lower terrace, flanked by two additional bedrooms, a workshop, and a sauna. At the rear, a skylight draws daylight deep into the plan, counterbalancing the studio’s subterranean character.

인도 구자라트, 카트화다 인근 빌라스야의 125에이커 유기농 농장 한가운데, 건물 하나가 평원 위에 낮고 묵직하게 뿌리내리고 있다. 멀리서 바라보면 피라미드형 금속 지붕이 야자수와 나무들 사이로 낯선 실루엣을 그리며, 그 아래 붉은 벽돌과 회색 콘크리트의 아치들이 수평선 위에 고요하게 펼쳐진다. 평원의 스케일 앞에 건물은 크지도 작지도 않게, 꼭 그만큼의 무게로 서 있다.

건물로 들어서는 과정은 직접적이지 않다. 대지 가장자리에서 오래전부터 그 자리를 지켜온 망고나무 곁의 굽은 계단을 오르면서 도착의 시퀀스가 시작된다. 이 입구 축선은 의도적으로 비틀리고 연장되어, 방문자는 목적지에 곧장 당도하는 대신 건물을 향해 천천히 나아가는 과정 자체를 경험한다. 건축가들은 도착을 하나의 절제된 의례로 만들었다. 서두르지 않아도 된다는 신호를 공간이 몸으로 먼저 전한다. 도면은 단정하고 대칭적인 십자형이다. 그러나 축선을 따라 걷다 보면 공간은 예상보다 훨씬 풍부하게 펼쳐진다.

두 세계가 만나는 곳
건물의 중심에는 세 개 층을 관통하는 중앙 네이브(nave)가 솟아 있다. 갤러리의 심장부다. 이 높은 홀은 주요 전시 공간으로 기능하면서도 복수의 용도가 위계 없이 공존하는 장소다. 남쪽 익부에는 입주 작가를 위한 게스트 룸과 생활 편의 시설이 갖춰지고, 벽면 곳곳의 벽감(recessed alcove)에는 도자기 작품과 스피커 설치물이 자리한다. 메자닌 층의 스튜디오와 도서관은 좁은 브리지를 통해 아래 공간을 내려다보며, 더 큰 볼륨 안에 친밀한 순간들을 만들어낸다. 전시 여정 내내 만들기와 보기의 대화는 끊기지 않는다.

빛과 구조의 대화
평면이 정제된 대칭을 보여준다면, 단면은 그 반대의 이야기를 한다. 볼륨의 변화, 층위의 교차, 정밀하게 계획된 천창들이 단면을 통해 공간의 복잡성을 만들어낸다. 동선의 경직성은 이 단면 조작을 통해 동적인 공간 경험으로 탈바꿈한다. 천창에서 내려오는 빛은 시간에 따라 각도를 달리하며 콘크리트 표면 위를 미끄러지고, 벽돌의 거친 질감 위에 부드러운 그라데이션을 남긴다.

내부 어디에 서 있든, 시선은 아치를 통해 다른 아치로, 그리고 저 멀리 외부의 풍경으로 이어진다. 복도 끝의 아치 개구부로 나무와 하늘이 액자처럼 담기고, 메자닌 브리지 위에서는 중앙 홀의 전체 높이가 한눈에 들어온다. 공간은 작은 스케일과 큰 스케일 사이를 오가며, 방문자의 시선을 끊임없이 새로운 방향으로 이끈다.

두 개의 구조 시스템, 하나의 질서
이 건물은 두 개의 구조 시스템을 나란히 사용한다. 하나는 아치형 보를 갖춘 내력 조적 구조(load-bearing masonry)이고, 다른 하나는 중앙 네이브를 가로지르는 독립 철골 트러스다. 건축가는 두 시스템을 의도적으로 갈라놓는다. 각자의 구축 논리가 스스로를 내보이도록. 한쪽에서는 벽돌과 콘크리트가 아치의 힘으로 하중을 처리하고, 다른 쪽에서는 날카로운 검은 강재 트러스가 넓은 스팬을 경쾌하게 가로지른다. 이 두 시스템의 대비가 공간에 구축적 긴장감을 불어넣는다.

구조를 숨기지 않는 이 건물에서, 테크토닉 논리 — 구조가 스스로를 내보이는 방식 — 자체가 공간 경험의 한 층위가 된다. 갤러리는 관습적인 공간 규범을 넘어, 만들기, 재료, 빈 공간 사이의 대화를 연출한다. 건축이 창작 행위에 직접 참여한다.

충돌하는 이원성 속에서, 이 건물은 복수성 안에서 일관성을 찾는다. 두 가지 물질 세계와 두 가지 시간 감각이 하나의 통합된 공간 질서 안으로 수렴한다. 재료의 견고함과 열린 느낌이 균형을 이루며, 건물은 교회의 정제된 행진 질서와 공장의 실용적 논리 사이 어딘가에 자리한다. 이 전개 속에서 구조는 스스로를 전시하고, 동시에 전시물 그 자체가 된다. 건물은 그릇이자 목격자다. 두 창작의 세계를 담고, 그것들이 펼쳐지는 과정을 함께 지켜본다.

Set within a 125-acre organic farm in Bilasya, Kathwada, two creative practices, hand painted ceramics and bespoke speaker design, converge. The result is a design gallery that is a layered, adaptable space and resists singular definition. Its architecture reflects this plurality through exposed brick, concrete, and steel to negotiate the intersection of material and spatial dualities. The robust external mass sits in contrast to an internal tectonic lightness, recalling Henri Labrouste's Bibliothèque nationale de France. This duality informed the foundational approach of the project, balancing nostalgia and innovation while sensitively reconciling a brief for an exposed material palette. It draws from Brutalism and contemporary industrial design, allowing the gallery to hold space for both public display and private creative practice, and thus generate a layered and tactile dialogue between the built form, wood-crafted speakers, and vibrant ceramics.

The program combines commercial, institutional, and residential functions within a cohesive spatial framework organized around a central axis. The spatial sequence begins with curved steps beside an existing mango tree, leading to the entrance. From the outset, this axis guides an entrance sequence that is indirect and deliberately elongated, transforming arrival into a measured progression. At the heart of the building, a central hall rises through three levels, serving as the primary gallery space while allowing multiple functions to coexist without hierarchy.

A southern wing accommodates guest rooms and essential amenities for the residences. Recessed alcoves display ceramic works and integrated speaker installations. Mezzanine studios and the library overlook the space through narrow bridges, creating moments of intimacy within the larger volume and facilitating a continuous dialogue throughout the gallery. While the plan reads as orthodox and symmetrical, sectional shifts introduce spatial complexity through variations in volume, interwoven levels, and calibrated skylights, thereby transforming the rigidity of the movement into a dynamic spatial experience.

The project employs two distinct structural systems: a load bearing masonry system articulated with arched beams, and an independent steel truss spanning the central nave. The deliberate separation of the two systems clarifies the building's tectonic order while allowing each system to assert a distinct identity. The mezzanine uses jack-arch flooring, while above it, a reinforced concrete roof punctuated by vaulted skylights works with a steel portal frame spanning the nave. A narrow slit along the pitched roof allows hot air to escape, enabling passive cooling within the gallery during the region's intense summers. Double slabs and jack-arch construction reduce heat transfer to the lower levels, while the thermal mass of the brick walls helps maintain cooler interior temperatures even during scorching afternoons.

By openly expressing the construction systems, the architecture allows the building's tectonic logic to become an integral part of the spatial experience. The gallery orchestrates a layered, immersive architectural journey, moving beyond conventional spatial norms. It frames a dialogue between making, material, and void, allowing architecture itself to participate in the act of creation. In this collision of contrasts and dualities, the building finds coherence in its plurality. It becomes both vessel and witness, accommodating two material worlds, two temporal sensibilities within a unified spatial order. It balances material solidity with a sense of openness, thus evolving as a hybrid condition, poised between the ordered procession of a church and the utilitarian logic of a factory. In this unfolding, the structure is exhibited and simultaneously becomes an exhibit in itself.

예상치 못한 곳에서 만나는 건축
마드리드 광역권의 위성도시 레가네스. 자동차 산업에 특화된 이 공업단지를 처음 걷는 사람이라면, 주변 건물들이 얼마나 무표정한지 금세 알아챈다. 예외 없이 기능만 남겨진 외피들, 빛도 재료도 감정도 없는 건물들이 줄지어 선 이 풍경 속에서, OOIIO 아르키텍투라가 설계한 레가네스 오토 센터는 단번에 눈을 사로잡는다. 흰색 슬래트가 민트그린 구조체 위에서 리듬을 만들며 하늘을 향해 뻗어 있고, 그 뒤로 반짝이는 산업용 덕트가 파사드의 일부인 양 당당하게 솟아 있다. 자동차 판매·수리 센터가 이렇게 생겼을 줄은 아무도 몰랐을 것이다.

창의성이란 뜻하지 않은 곳에서 더욱 빛난다. 대형 공공건물이나 주거 명작에만 허락된 것이라 여겨지던 건축적 상상력을, OOIIO는 이 프로젝트에 과감히 끌어들였다. 의뢰는 단순하지 않았다. 넓은 판매 공간과 사무실, 기계·판금 수리 공방, 수백 대 차량의 보관 창고, 그리고 건물 내부를 끊임없이 오가는 차량의 동선까지 모두 품어야 하는 복합 시설이었다. 거기에 더 까다로운 조건이 있었다. 부지 안에는 수년째 방치된 낡은 주방 기기 공장이 이미 자리 잡고 있었다.

낡은 공장, 새로운 기억
이런 종류의 프로젝트는 대개 엔지니어링 회사의 손에 넘어간다. 예측 가능하고 철저히 기능 중심적인 해법이 나오고, 건축적 품위 같은 것은 애초에 의제에 오르지도 않는다. 공업단지 어디서나 볼 수 있는 그 무감각한 건물들이 그 증거다. 그러나 OOIIO는 달랐다. 설계팀이 내린 첫 번째 결정은 기존 산업 구조물을 철거하는 대신 재활용하는 것이었다. 새 건물을 짓는 편이 시간과 비용 면에서 더 단순할 수 있었지만, 환경적 대가는 비교할 수 없을 만큼 컸다. 수십 년 묵은 주방 공장이 자동차 센터로 탈바꿈할 수 있는가. 이 프로젝트는 그 질문에 힘차게 답한다.

기존 구조체는 증가한 하중을 견디기 위해 보강했고, 원래의 지붕은 걷어냈다. 그 위로 태양광 퍼골라가 씌워진 새로운 최상층 보관 공간을 들였다. 이 퍼골라는 건물 자체의 에너지 소비를 충당하고도 남을 만큼의 전력을 생산한다. 공장의 기억은 지워진 것이 아니라 새로운 언어로 번역됐다.

기능의 층위
평면도를 펼쳐보면 이 건물의 논리가 선명하게 드러난다. 지상층은 차량 전시와 판매 공간, 기계 수리 공방과 판금 작업장이 공존한다. 고객과 직원의 동선이 엮이는 이 층은 유일하게 공조 시스템이 가동되는 곳이기도 하다. 1층에는 사무 공간이 자리 잡았고, 상부 두 개 층은 수백 대 차량을 수용하는 개방형 보관 창고로 쓰인다.

냉난방이 필요 없는 상층부는 사방이 열려 있다. 마드리드의 혹서기에도 강한 자연 통풍 덕분에 실내 온도가 바깥보다 몇 도씩 낮게 유지된다. 에어컨 없이 이루어지는 이 수동적 냉방은 설계가 아니라 건축이 이룬 성취다. 양측면을 따라 설치된 두 개의 대형 경사로는 차량 동선을 층별로 분리하면서, 지상층 고객 차량의 흐름과도 자연스럽게 공존한다.

사무 공간 안으로 들어서면 이 건물의 내밀한 면이 모습을 드러낸다. 격자형 콘크리트 슬래브가 그대로 드러난 천장, 민트그린 바닥, 그리고 사방을 가득 채운 유리창 너머로 흰 슬래트의 패턴이 겹쳐 보인다. 바깥의 빛은 슬래트를 통해 부드럽게 걸러져 들어오고, 실내는 경쾌하면서도 차분하다. 산업 시설 안에서 이만한 공간감을 경험하기란 흔한 일이 아니다.

파사드: 이 건물의 얼굴
이 프로젝트에서 파사드는 단순한 외피가 아니다. 폐쇄적이고 단열재도 없던 옛 공장의 벽돌 외벽은 자취를 감췄다. 그 자리에는 민트그린 하부 구조체에 고정된 크고 작은 흰색 금속 슬래트들이 들어섰다. 슬래트 사이로는 산업용 덕트와 환기구가 고개를 내밀고 있는데, 이것들을 숨기는 대신 파사드의 일부로 당당히 드러낸 것이 이 설계의 핵심이다. 내부 설비를 파사드로 끌어내자 건물의 산업적 성격은 기념비적 이미지로 거듭났고, 동시에 내부 공간은 차량 동선을 위해 온전히 비워졌다.

가까이 다가서는 순간, 슬래트가 빛에 반응해 만들어내는 그림자와 반사의 층위가 눈에 들어온다. 끝이 둥근 알약 형태의 판들이 높이를 달리하며 하늘을 향해 늘어서 있다. 퍼포레이티드 메탈 패널은 빛을 투과시키면서도 차단하고, 마치 자동차 대리점의 수직 배너를 연상시키는 리듬으로 시선을 붙든다. 그 뒤에서 반짝이는 금속 덕트들은 소음이 아니라 음악처럼 서 있다. 진입부에서 바라보면, V자로 벌어진 민트그린 기둥들이 건물을 땅 위에 가볍게 들어 올리고, 경사로를 감싸는 곡면 패널이 파사드에 운동감을 더한다.

기계가 감동이 되는 순간
르 코르뷔지에는 건물을 기계에 비유했다. 모든 것이 제자리에 있어야 하고, 효율과 기능은 타협의 대상이 아니라고. 그러나 스포츠카와 밴이 둘 다 목적지까지 데려다주지만 전혀 다른 경험을 선사하듯, 건물도 기능 너머의 감동을 만들어낼 수 있다. 자동차 브랜드가 그토록 공들여 감성을 설계하듯, OOIIO는 이 산업 시설에 바로 그 논리를 적용했다.

레가네스 오토 센터는 무엇보다 예외의 건물이다. 산업단지의 자동차 정비소에 이만한 건축적 야심을 불어넣는 일은 드물다. 그 결과물은 단조로운 산업 경관 속에서 질감과 색채, 빛의 대비로 존재감을 발산하는 하나의 조각이 됐다. 태양광 에너지로 스스로 돌아가며 주변 건물들에게도 전력을 나눠주고, 폐공장의 뼈대 위에 새로운 피부를 입혀 수백 대의 차들과 함께 하루하루를 채운다. 르 코르뷔지에의 말처럼 기계는 완벽하게 작동해야 한다. 그러나 OOIIO는 거기서 멈추지 않았다. 기계가 감동을 줄 수 있다는 것, 이 건물은 그 사실을 조용히, 그러나 분명하게 증명한다.

Creativity is an extraordinarily powerful tool, capable of providing solutions to almost any challenge. In architecture, imagination and unique solutions shouldn’t be the exclusive preserve of grand public buildings or those dream homes we’d all love to live in. There’s also room for innovation—and excitement—in the most unexpected places.

That was the starting point when a businessman commissioned the OOIIO architecture firm to design a large building for car sales and repairs in an industrial park specializing in the automotive sector in Leganés, one of the cities in Greater Madrid. The challenge was as appealing as it was complex: a large scale building that had to house a spacious retail area, offices, mechanical and body shops, as well as storage areas for hundreds of vehicles while also managing the intense daily flow of cars within the building itself. Added to this functional complexity was a key constraint: the site already contained a disused industrial building, an old kitchen factory that had been abandoned for years.

This type of architecture is usually left to engineering firms that opt for predictable and strictly functional solutions. Such commissions are rarely entrusted to creative firms like OOIIO. One need only walk through any industrial park to see the scant attention paid to architecture, light, materials, or these buildings’ ability to convey emotion. That is why this project stands as an exception, a true rarity in the world of auto repair shops.

As Le Corbusier said, a building—including an industrial one can be understood as a machine, where everything must be in its place. A car must function perfectly: efficiency and function are non-negotiable. But it must also excite and generate sensations. Driving a sports car is not the same as driving a van, even though both take you from point A to point B. Car brands know this well and consciously work on that emotional component. In this case, that same logic is applied to architecture.

The first major decision of the project was to recycle the existing industrial structure and adapt it to new uses. This is clearly a more sustainable approach than demolishing and constructing a completely new building an option that would have been faster and simpler, but also far more costly in environmental terms. Can an old kitchen factory be transformed into a center for car workshops and sales? The answer is a resounding yes.

Following functional criteria, the ground floor is designated for retail space and mechanical and bodywork workshops, while the two upper floors are used as vehicle storage. This required reinforcing the existing structure to support the new loads. In addition, the original roof was removed and a new upper storage level was created, protected from the sun by photovoltaic pergolas capable of generating enough energy to power not only the building but also others in the surrounding area.

Two large ramps are incorporated on the sides to organize internal circulation and coexist with the paths of customer vehicles on the ground floor. With the addition of offices on the first floor, the building’s functional program is fully realized.

The old factory had a closed, heavy brick facade, without insulation and practically invisible in its surroundings. The project completely transforms the relationship between the interior and exterior, opening the building to its context. The upper storage floors are not climate controlled and remain open, concentrating energy consumption solely on the ground floor, where workers and customers are located.

The new envelope consists of large white metal slats of varying sizes, anchored to a mint green substructure, combined with chimneys and vents from the industrial facilities. By bringing these facilities to the façade, the building’s industrial character is showcased and monumentalized, while simultaneously freeing up interior space to facilitate vehicle circulation.

The façade thus becomes the defining element of the project: a car dealership that stands out amidst the monotonous industrial landscape thanks to its textures, formal interplay, and chromatic contrasts. The slats evoke the vertical banners of car dealerships, capturing the visitor’s attention, adding character, and reducing energy consumption through passive solar control. Even during Madrid’s intense summer, the upper floors maintain a temperature several degrees lower thanks to cross-ventilation, without the need for air conditioning.

스페인 카탈루냐 만레사(Manresa), 카르데네르강(Cardener River)이 굽어 보이는 절벽 위에는 한때 사람들이 오가던 오솔길이 있었다. 1522년, 이냐시오 데 로욜라(Ignatius of Loyola)는 이 길을 걸으며 훗날 영신수련(Spiritual Exercises)의 씨앗이 될 사유를 키웠다. 도시 레스 에스코디네스(Les Escodines) 구역의 여성들은 이 길을 따라 카르데네르강으로 내려갔다. 폰트 벨(Pont Vell)과 크레우 델 토르트(Creu del Tort)를 포우 데 룸(Pou de Llum)과 이어주던 이 역사적 연결로는 세월 속에서 서서히 끊어졌다. 가파른 지형 앞에 사람의 발길이 멈추었고, 절벽은 도시와 강 사이의 단절을 굳혀갔다.

The Landscape Staircase in the Vall del Paradís is an intervention that recovers a lost section of the Camino de Ignacio de Loyola in Manresa. The project reconnects Pont Vell and Creu del Tort with the Pou de Llum, restoring part of the historic path where Ignatius of Loyola walked in 1522, during his stay in the city when he wrote the Spiritual Exercises. This path was also traditionally used by residents of the Les Escodines neighbourhood, especially women, to reach the Cardener River.

Before the intervention, the most significant part of the route had disappeared due to the difficult terrain, particularly the steep section between Creu del Tort and Font de Fans. The project aims to restore this historical and human connection with the landscape of the Cardener River while respecting the agricultural environment, existing vegetation, and dry-stone walls.

The staircase bridges a 13 metre difference in height between two terraces, creating a new viewpoint over the Vall del Paradís, the Cardener River, and Montserrat. It is conceived as both a functional path and a sensory experience. As users move along the staircase, their perception alternates between proximity to the rock and openness to the landscape, generating a sequence between earth and air that connects the individual with both the nearest and farthest surroundings.

The structure is separated from the rock and designed as a permeable element, allowing views through it. A curtain of corrugated steel filters the landscape without blocking it, creating a balance between protection and contemplation. Structurally, the staircase is anchored to the upper terrace with concrete walls, from which metal trusses extend in cantilever to support the suspended staircase.

The project uses a single material language: steel. The repetition of Ø16 mm corrugated steel bars forms the entire structure, achieving transparency and responding to an ethic of moderation by using only what is necessary. The pavement, also made of corrugated steel, is placed over the existing ground, allowing natural drainage and enabling the ground to breathe.

The intervention transforms the route into a bodily experience and provides new perspectives of the city and Montserrat. It reconnects two parts of the city separated by topography and turns an abandoned area into a functional, social, and landscape space, enhancing the natural beauty of the valley.

CSWADI-Main Pavilion of the International Horticultural Exhibition 2024 Chengdu

땅과 물이 만나는 자리
중국 청두 동부 신구, 강샤호(錦霞湖)를 끼고 완만하게 펼쳐진 구릉지에 2024 청두 국제원예박람회의 심장부가 자리한다. 중국서남건축설계연구원(CSWADI)이 설계한 주관 파빌리온은 연면적 2만 3천 제곱미터에 달하는 대형 공공건축으로, 박람회 폐막식과 국제 화훼 경연, 국제 포럼을 아우르는 핵심 무대가 되었다. 행사가 끝난 뒤에는 시민 문화 센터로 전환되어 일상 속으로 조용히 스며들 예정이다. 설계의 출발점은 하나의 질문이었다. 사천(四川)의 자연과 인문 환경 안에서, 현대의 대형 공공건축이 어떻게 그 땅과 화해할 수 있는가.

형태를 지운다는 것
강샤호 북쪽 수변을 따라 구릉이 낮게 가라앉는 지점, 설계진은 건물이 풍경 위로 솟아오르는 대신 땅속으로 스며들도록 했다. 건물 기능의 절반가량에 해당하는 1만 2천 제곱미터를 북쪽 수변 지형 안으로 매립하듯 배치함으로써, 대규모 토공 없이 자연 지형의 고저차를 활용한 다층 조망 플랫폼을 얻어냈다. 동쪽으로는 이중 지반층 진입부를 구성해 도시의 다양한 교통 흐름을 자연스럽게 받아들인다. 거대한 구조물로 군림하기를 의도적으로 거부한 이 건물은, 오히려 그 겸손함이 더 깊게 기억하게 만든다.

흐르는 공간, 지워진 경계
지붕은 건물 전체를 수평으로 아우르며 물결처럼 흐른다. 사천의 전통 민가가 마당과 처마, 안과 밖을 한 호흡으로 연결하듯, 이 파빌리온도 지붕 아래 전략적으로 배치된 개구부들을 통해 실내외의 경계를 지워나간다. 유기적으로 굽이치는 지붕면은 시선을 주변의 산과 호수 쪽으로 자연스럽게 이끈다. 방문자는 어느 지점에 서더라도 건물 안에 있으면서 동시에 자연 속에 있다는 감각을 얻는다.

삼성퇴의 신조(神鳥)와 은행나무 캐노피
이 건물이 가장 공을 들인 부분은 광범위한 지역주의가 아닌, 이 땅에 뿌리내린 구체적인 문화다. 완만하고 군더더기 없는 지붕의 곡선은 삼성퇴(三星堆) 유물에 새겨진 신조(神鳥)의 형상에서 영감을 받았다. 고대 촉나라의 신화적 새가 현대 건축의 지붕선으로 다시 태어난 셈이다. 실내외를 연속으로 가로지르는 은행나무 캐노피는 청두의 시목(市木)인 은행나무에 바치는 헌정이다. 수천 개의 금속 은행잎이 천장에서 흔들리듯 내려오는 광경은 가을 은행나무 아래 서 있는 듯한 착각을 불러일으키며, 자연과 인간의 경험 사이에 따뜻한 대화를 만들어낸다. 입장 라운지에서 올려다본 그 풍경은 이 건물에서 가장 먼저 기억에 새겨지는 장면이 될 것이다.

박람회 이후, 일상 속으로
행사가 끝나도 이 건물은 사라지지 않는다. 시민 문화 센터로 전환된 뒤에도 파빌리온은 강샤호의 수면과 사천의 하늘을 배경으로 계속해서 성장할 것이다. 땅과 물과 식물과 건축이 한데 어우러진 이 풍경은, 시간이 지날수록 도시의 자연과 문화가 쌓인 결로써 청두 사람들의 일상에 자리 잡아갈 것이다. 형태를 지우겠다는 첫 번째 결심은, 결국 가장 오래 남는 건축을 만들어내는 방법이었다.

By strategically embedding 12,000 square meters of facilities along the northern waterfront, the design minimizes earthwork and creates multi-tiered viewing platforms. Additionally, an eastern "double ground floor" entrance integrates with the topography to support diverse urban traffic flow.

Blurring Boundaries: Spatial Fluidity Inspired by the spatial fluidity of traditional Sichuan residences, the pavilion bridges indoor and outdoor spaces through strategic punctures. A dynamically flowing roof unifies the building volumes horizontally, directing the visual experience seamlessly toward the surrounding mountains and waters.

Humanities Writing: Localized Cultural Symbols - The architecture emphasizes site specific cultural integration rather than broad regionalism. The graceful, unadorned curves of the roof are inspired by the Sanxingdui "Divine Bird". Meanwhile, an expansive "Ginkgo Canopy"—honoring Chengdu's city tree—spreads across indoor and outdoor spaces, fostering an organic dialogue between nature and the human experience.

Mastering Techniques: Engineering and Green Design The pavilion utilizes intelligent green building strategies, prioritizing passive technologies such as natural ventilation, daylighting, and earthwork balance.The prevailing northern wind is cooled by the lake to enhance interior comfort, while a sunken courtyard ensures that 60% of usable spaces receive over six hours of natural light daily. Aluminum panels are expertly used to sculpt the complex curved roof, which is adorned with carefully calibrated "metal ginkgo leaves" to create a harmonious cultural landscape.The design incorporates a downsized, flexibly controlled HVAC system, electrically operated ventilation windows, and a permeable concrete plaza with three-dimensional landscaping to ensure micro-environmental resilience.

Following the exposition, this dynamically designed building will return to daily life as a civic cultural center. It will continue to grow in communion with its environment, remaining an indispensable part of the city's nature and culture.

골목이 품은 논리
교토에서 건축을 한다는 것은 역사를 정면으로 마주하는 일이다. 기온 거리 한 켠, 오래된 초등학교 터 위에 구마 겐고 건축사무소가 카펠라 교토를 설계했을 때, 그 주변 골목에는 이미 하나의 건축 언어가 수백 년째 살아 숨 쉬고 있었다. 마치야(町家), 교토 고유의 전통 목조 도시형 주택이다.

마치야는 앞쪽에 작은 상점을 두고, 안으로 깊숙이 들어갈수록 생활 공간이 이어진다. 그 사이사이에는 정원이나 중정이 끼어들며 빛과 공기를 불러온다. 폭은 좁고 깊이는 깊다. 그 깊이 속에는 일종의 리듬이 있다. 개방에서 폐쇄로, 공적인 영역에서 사적인 영역으로 점진적으로 전이하는, 살아 있는 공간 논리다.

싱가포르 기반의 브루인 디자인 오피스(Brewin Design Office, 이하 BDO)는 이 논리에서 카펠라 교토 인테리어의 핵심 문법을 발견했다. BDO의 설립자 로버트 청(Robert Cheng)은 "마치야의 매력은 고립된 개별 아이디어에 있지 않다. 그것은 일관된 공간 논리의 총체다"라고 말한다. "우리가 특히 영감을 받은 것은 마치야 특유의 리듬과 전이였다. 더 공적이고 열린 영역에서 점점 더 사적이고 사색적인 영역으로 이행하는 공간의 연속성이었다."

문턱을 넘는 여정

중정, 호텔의 심장
로비를 지나면 넓은 중정이 펼쳐진다. 호텔 전체의 구심점이 되도록 설계된 이 공간의 한가운데에는 얕은 연못이 자리한다. 크고 작은 돌들이 연못 가를 에워싸고, 나뭇가지 몇 그루가 물 위로 그림자를 드리운다. 야간에는 대나무 문양으로 직조된 파사드에 내부 조명이 번지며, 건물 전체가 거대한 안돈(行燈) 같은 빛을 발한다. 연못 수면은 그 빛을 고스란히 받아 조용히 흔들린다.

"교토에서 작업한다는 것은 특권이자 풍요로운 경험이었다"고 청은 회고한다. "이 도시에서 역사는 정적인 유물로 보존되는 것이 아니라, 일상의 삶 속에서 살아 있고 실천된다. 동시대적인 무언가를 만들면서도 그 문화적 맥락과 유산에 경의를 표해야 한다는 것, 그것이 기회이자 책임이었다."

교토 장인의 손, 공간에 새기다
공용 공간 전반에 걸쳐 BDO는 마치야와 교토 장인 정신을 떠올리게 하는 요소들을 세심하게 배치했다. 수작업 미장으로 마감한 벽면의 질감, 목재 조이너리의 정교한 맞물림, 손으로 짜 올린 직물의 섬세한 결이 공간 곳곳에서 빛과 함께 숨을 쉰다. 응접 공간은 격자형 스크린으로 둘러싸여 있어, 내부 조명이 켜지면 방 전체가 일본 전통 안돈 등롱의 형태를 띤다. 금빛 병풍 앞에 놓인 네모난 안돈 조명 두 개가 공간에 고즈넉한 정적을 더한다.

세 개의 식탁, 세 개의 이야기
카펠라 교토는 서로 다른 성격의 레스토랑 세 곳을 품는다. 소노마(Sonoma)는 교토 인근 지역 식재료를 중심으로 한 메뉴와 오픈 키친을 선보인다. 연한 참나무 카운터와 쇼지 스크린, 줄지어 늘어선 원형 펜던트 조명이 따뜻하고 밝은 분위기를 만들어 낸다. 요이(Yoi)는 한층 캐주얼한 심야 다이닝 공간으로, 한때 이 터를 지켰던 초등학교의 목재를 되살려 공간을 완성했다. 어두운 석재 상판의 테이블과 격자 문양 스크린 뒤로 스며드는 호박빛 조명이 밤의 깊이를 더한다. 란테른(Lanterne)은 프렌치 브라스리로, 대리석 기둥과 헤링본 패턴 바닥 등 BDO가 파리를 떠올려 고른 요소들로 채워진 이질적이면서도 흥미로운 공간이다.

객실, 교토의 하루를 담다
89개의 객실 곳곳에도 목재 마감과 쇼지 스크린이 이어진다. 대부분의 객실 창 너머로는 가부렌조 극장(歌舞練場) 또는 교토에서 가장 오래된 선종 사찰인 겐닌지(建仁寺, 1202년 창건)의 풍경이 들어온다. 침실 헤드보드 위로는 전통 일본 직물의 문양을 현대적으로 재해석한 패널이 배치되어, 아침 햇빛이 비스듬히 내리쬐면 은은한 그림자 문양이 공간을 가득 채운다. 어두운 목재와 따뜻한 간접 조명이 만들어 내는 층위감 속에서, 객실은 그 자체로 하나의 완결된 마치야가 된다.

여섯 개의 스위트에는 별도의 히노키(檜) 욕조가 마련되어 있다. 일본 온천 문화에서 영감을 받은 이 욕조는 회색 화강암으로 마감된 욕실 한가운데에 자리하며, 나무 특유의 온기와 수목 향기를 공간 안으로 불러들인다. 차갑고 단단한 돌의 결과 따뜻하고 부드러운 나무의 결이 나란히 놓이는 이 대비 속에서, 마치야가 수백 년간 지켜 온 감각의 언어가 조용히 말을 건넨다.

The Capella Kyoto hotel was built by Kengo Kuma and Associates on the grounds of an old primary school in Gion, a historic district of the city that's home to a number of traditional wooden townhouses known as machiya.

Machiya typically have a deep yet narrow footprint with a small shop at the front and living spaces nestled further towards the back, interspersed by gardens or courtyards.

Inspired by this layout, Singapore based firm Brewin Design Office (BDO) decided to give the hotel's interior a similarly staggered composition.

Guests enter the hotel via a lengthy walkway flanked by shoji screens, eventually coming to a wood lined reception lobby. From one wall protrudes a large, twisted sculpture that's meant to resemble shimenawa – a kind of rope that's used in Shinto purification rituals.

Just beyond is an expansive courtyard that's meant to be the nucleus of the hotel; at its centre is a shallow pond, fringed by rocks and some trees.

"What is compelling about the machiya is that its characteristics are not isolated ideas, but part of a coherent spatial logic," BDO founder Robert Cheng told Dezeen.

"We were particularly inspired by the machiya's sense of rhythm and progression, expressed through a sequence of spaces that transition from more public, open areas into increasingly private and contemplative zones."

"Rather than a direct entry into reception, we designed the arrival to extend through layered thresholds screens, vestibules, and controlled sightlines – to reveal the space gradually," he continued.

"This introduces moments of pause, allowing the transition from city to interior to slow and settle."

In the hotel's communal spaces, BDO implemented features it felt were synonymous with machiya and Kyoto craftsmanship, from hand-washed plaster walls to timber joinery and delicate woven textures.

"Working in Kyoto was both a privilege and an enriching experience," explained Cheng. "It is a city where history is not preserved as a static artefact but actively lived and practiced in everyday life."

"This presented both an opportunity and a responsibility to design something contemporary while being respectful of the cultural context and heritage."

Capella Kyoto's guest lounge is boxed in by latticed screens so that, once lights are switched on within, the room mimics the appearance of a Japanese andon lantern.

Guests also have the option of dining at three different restaurants. Sonoma features a regional menu and open kitchen, while Yoi is a more casual late-night venue decked out in reclaimed wood from the school that once stood on site.

Finally, there's Lanterne, a French brasserie that's been finished with elements BDO thought were distinctly Parisian, including marble columns and herringbone floors.

Wood lined surfaces and shoji screens continue to appear throughout the hotel's 89 bedrooms, most of which have views of the nearby Kaburenjo Theatre or Kennin-ji, the oldest Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto.

Six suites were given their own soaking tub in a nod to Japanese onsen hot springs.
