Architecture and design studio Golem has developed a modular furniture system made up of upholstered balls that can be used to create organically shaped furniture and interior spaces.

The Amoreba system emerged from the Paris based studio's research into ways of creating unconventional solutions for modern living spaces.

"Amoreba is a surface treatment that can seamlessly spread across rigid orthogonal interiors, transforming them into spaces tailored to contemporary, non-conformist lifestyles," said Golem.

The product consists of upholstered balls that can be combined in a wide range of configurations, using custom-designed software to model three-dimensional surfaces.

The system's organic forms and squishy texture reference the microscopic bumps of a mushroom colony, which Golem's founder Ariel André claimed he wanted to recreate from the perspective of a tiny creature.

"Starting from the standpoint of those usually overlooked – here, the microscopic beings –allows us to create new forms and spaces that enrich the experience of life for everyone," said André.

The balls can be used to cover geometric or curved forms, enabling the studio to adapt the shape to suit different spaces and scenarios envisaged by the user.

Each element is sized to fit in the palm of a hand and is filled with a blend of fibres that gives a satisfying bounciness when the balls are squeezed or stepped on.

Golem presented the Amoreba system at the New York edition of the Collectible design fair in 2024, in the form of an armchair, and has also used it in the Brussels home of curator Diana Campbell.

Campbell wanted to transform an existing bedroom into a conversation pit for socialising with friends that can also function as a guest bedroom or a daybed lined with built-in bookshelves.

"The Curator's pit has been designed as a comfortable, communal space for sharing ideas, reading and engaging in conversation," the designers said.

The Brussels project features balls upholstered in a deep-red hue that complements the velvet covered walls and the joinery of the mid-century interior designed by Jules Wabbes.

The system can be adapted to suit any space by altering the colour so it blends in or contrasts with the surroundings.

Amoreba is produced entirely in France using locally sourced fabrics and fibres. Sustainability was a key consideration for the material choices and manufacturing methods, which enable disassembly and recycling.

André founded his studio in 2021 with the objective of exploring alternative approaches to creating spaces and objects that are inherently playful and transformative.

At the foot of the gentle hills that frame the eastern shore of Lake Garda, in a landscape dotted with olive trees, cypresses, and oleanders, single family holiday homes began to appear over the course of the twentieth century, either scattered across the terrain or clustered in small residential complexes.

Within this setting unfolds the project for the renovation and extension of a 1960s villa situated directly on the lakefront. The architecture harmoniously integrates with the surrounding landscape, articulated into three volumes arranged on two levels and embedded within the natural slope.

The main body projects toward the lake; a second, parallel volume stands further back; and a third, newly added element is set into the hillside, completing the composition and enclosing the entrance courtyard.

The communal spaces extend towards the lake in a gradual, modulated transition between interior and exterior. The architecture appears to emerge from the hillside, progressively dissolving through the use of glazed walls and reflective surfaces. This ascending promenade culminates on the roof, where a solarium and swimming pool open onto spectacular vistas of the surrounding landscape.

The lakeside elevation is conceived as a "double front" composed of mobile panels that modulate environmental conditions and the relationship with the outdoors. The facade is wrapped in an openable loggia, where the expansive windows of the living room are shielded by vertical aluminium louvres, sliding on a triple track. This mechanism allows the panels to adopt any configuration, offering precise control over sunlight and privacy while blurring perceptual and spatial boundaries. When minimally overlapped, the modules create a uniform screen that fully eclipses the interior; when fully retracted, they dematerialise the first-floor volume, bringing the social spaces into direct communion with the lake.

A palette of neutral, pale hues echoes the tones of local stone and the natural lake banks. The cladding in pinkish Lessinia stone, laid in horizontal bands with a split face finish, recalls the stratification of the hillside rock, accentuating the continuity between the built form and the landscape. At the northern edge of Kössen's settlement core, where the road leads toward the triple sports hall and the residential and nursing home for the elderly, everyday village life becomes particularly concentrated. Between the town hall, the church, and the local theatre – the familiar center of communal life a new building is emerging that quietly seeks to connect all these places: the Kössen Education Center.

Here, primary school, kindergarten, nursery, after school care, and sports hall are brought together under one roof. Angular black-concrete volumes are punctured by small tree filled patios at this home in Mexico, completed by architecture studio Taller Alberto Calleja.

Named Casa Mavra, referencing the Greek word for black, the 1,300-square metre home sits surrounded by dense woodland in the town of Valle de Bravo.

Taller Alberto Calleja (TAC) crafted the home's low-lying form with black pigmented concrete to blend in with the shadows of the surrounding trees, aiming to create a "sculptural architectural object" that would not dominate the landscape.

"The intention was to create a strong and monolithic presence while allowing the spaces inside to remain intimate and closely connected to light, vegetation, and the experience of inhabiting the site," the studio told Dezeen.

"Although the house is conceived as a sculptural architectural object, it does not seek to compete with the landscape," it added.

"Instead, the intention was to position the volumes in a way that feels naturally grounded within the terrain, allowing the architecture to coexist with the mountains and vegetation rather than dominate them."

The two intersecting volumes of Casa Mavra form an X shaped plan, entered from the south via a long stepped path alongside a narrow pool of water and sheltered by a concrete wall that gradually rises in height.

This entrance route ends in a large patio space that divides a living, dining and kitchen wing to the west from a bedroom wing to the east.

Each of these wings is accessed via a semi external, covered corridor, linked to small patios with plants growing through circular and square cut-outs in the roof and walls.

"One of the most significant gestures is the continuous wall that rises along the access sequence, accompanied by the sound of water descending along the stairways," said the studio.

"As the wall unfolds through the site, it ultimately transforms into the inclined roofs of the house, becoming the architectural gesture that gives Casa Mavra its distinctive character," it added.

The board marked black concrete of the home's structure has been left exposed throughout, creating a strong contrast with both the surrounding greenery and the sunlight that enters through circular cut-outs.

At the end of each volume, fully glazed walls overlook the landscape and open out onto small timber terraces, providing a seating area alongside the main bedroom and a small pool next to the living area.

"The solidity of the concrete contrasts with large glazed openings that bring natural light deep into the interiors and frame views of the landscape, creating a balance between heaviness and transparency," said the studio.

The historic row of houses at Oberamteistraße 28 32, along with the surviving basement of the "Stone House" that had occupied plot no. 34, but was demolished in 1972, are among the oldest and most interesting buildings in the former free imperial city of Reutlingen. These architectural artifacts date back to the 13th century, when the city of Reutlingen was founded. The ensemble is therefore one of the oldest rows of houses in southern Germany, authentically reflecting the development of building and living culture over the centuries.

The rehabilitation, which follows historic preservation criteria, has also required the construction of a new corner building where the former "Stone House" once stood, which shores up the surviving historic ensemble and protects it from collapse. The old buildings serve as a museum and are themselves exhibits, displaying over 700 years of urban, cultural, and architectural history.

The new building's outward appearance is restrained. The internal structure consists of wooden trusswork that braces the adjoining row of houses and reestablishes the lost form of the historic house. The new building facilitates barrier-free access to the old buildings and provides space for small events. The roof and facades are clad with a homogeneous layer of cast-glass "beaver-tail" tiles.

Depending on the conditions of incident light, reflection, and interior lighting, the wooden trusswork behind it is more or less visible, and the building appears diaphanous and iridescent – giving it a mysterious quality, like a chimera. The newly designed outer skin makes the interior seem blurry, like a distant memory. Something that persists in the memories of those who still knew the old house is made visible again for future generations.

The new building's geometrically complex, load bearing wooden structure was developed parametrically. The architectural requirements and constructive logic align precisely. A triple-layer, gradually dissipating substructure of diagonally and horizontally overlapping wooden members carries the glass beaver-tail tiles as external cladding for weather protection.

No thermal insulation or air conditioning is required in the new building, which also serves as a protective enclosure for the historic cellar. Open joints along the entire exterior of the building provide natural ventilation and smoke extraction. The building was designed for circularity in accordance with the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) design and sustainability concept. Thus, all connections are screwed together so they can be easily disassembled.

Concrete was generally avoided and only used where structurally necessary. The Historical Oberamteistraße Museum project is supported by the federal program "Nationale Projekte des Städtebaus" (National Urban Development Projects), enabling it to preserve and upgrade one of the oldest rows of half-timbered houses in southern Germany.

Located in Ascázubi, at the foot of Pambamarca Hill, the project originated as a refuge: a space for pause and contemplation for bike park users seeking shelter from the harsh Andean climate.

In this territory of sweeping views and ancestral history, where pucarás (fortified settlements) are still preserved, the objective was to blend architecture and nature through an intervention capable of integrating with its surroundings and engaging with the landscape without imposing itself.

The design is defined by a simple volumetric gesture, consisting of two solid volumes of pigmented concrete that emerge from the earth and delineate the interior space, and a lightweight wooden roof that projects over the terrain like a lookout point, framing the horizon, the forest, and the movement of cyclists.

The concrete volumes house the service areas: the reception and shop on one side, and the restaurant kitchen on the other. Their materiality, pigmented in earthy tones, reinforces the idea of belonging to the land. The openings filter natural light into the interior and create a sober, introverted exterior expression.

The laminated wood roof is conceived as a light and rhythmic element, composed of six robust porticos that support both front and rear overhangs, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior. Beneath this shared roof are the dining area and various resting spaces, articulated by planters that unify and organize uses without interrupting the connection to the landscape.

On the front façade, the structure incorporates a tempered glass panel that protects users from the weather while maintaining visual continuity between the interior and the landscape.

From the exterior, native species such as myrtle, white straw, and cat’s tail trees initiate a transition toward a more colorful interior, featuring introduced vegetation such as ferns, philodendrons, and yellow lilies. The interior vegetation and wood contrast with the hardness of the pigmented concrete on the façade and in the interior, creating a warm and natural atmosphere that maintains the same chromatic logic as its context.

Situated in the present and traditional homeland of the Penobscot Nation, Tekαkαpimək Visitor Contact Station is a stunning 7,900 square-foot building and 23acre landscape atop Lookout Mountain in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.

Tekαkαpimək — pronounced deh gah gah bee mook, Penobscot for “as far as one can see” — arose from a partnership between a Wabanaki Advisory Board and Elliotsville Foundation, in consultation with National Park Service. Tekαkαpimək is a work of collaborative design and construction, intentionally imbued with Wabanaki knowledge.

Architectural and landscape designs resulted from a process between Elliotsville Foundation, representatives of the Mi’kmaq Nation, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Penobscot Nation, Passamaquoddy Tribe; Saunders Architecture, Reed Hilderbrand Landscape Architecture, WeShouldDoItAll, and National Park Service (NPS). A multitude of thoughts, cultural narratives, and ideas have formed a collective lens with Wabanaki sensibilities, helping orient the interior, landscape and exhibit design of the Contact Station, as epicenter of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.

Designing a home for friends is a rare privilege for interior designers whereby familiarity brings with it an intimacy that allows creative instincts to unfold with an unusual freedom. Such was the case when Marcin Czopek, founder of Kraków-based studio Mistovia, was commissioned by Agata and Przemek, founders of the graphic design practice bisoñ studio, to remodel their new house in Kraków. Longtime friends of Marcin and collaborators on the studio’s visual identity, the couple shared an aesthetic alignment that shaped the project from the outset comprised of bold gestures, graphic clarity and playful contrasts. The result is an interior where expressive materials, sculptural forms and vibrant accents coexist with an atmosphere that remains unmistakably warm and liveable.

The relationship between the designer and his clients stretches back many years, beginning with a meeting at a design fair in Łódź that gradually evolved into a lasting friendship. Agata and Przemek followed Mistovia’s growth closely and contributed to it by developing the studio’s graphic identity. When the time came for them to create a home of their own, the roles naturally reversed. “Designing for friends always carries more emotion, but also more satisfaction,” Marcin reflects. “It’s great to bring something real into the lives of people I care about.”

After years of living in central Kraków, Agata and Przemek began to long for quieter surroundings and more space to work, and the 125-square metre house on the city’s outskirts that they ultimately chose offered precisely that. Marcin’s first move was to reorganise the ground floor to maximise openness and daylight, removing partition walls to create a fluid sequence between the hallway, kitchen and living area. The only immovable constraint, a structural chimney stack, was concealed within a sculptural, oak-clad volume that now serves as a spatial hinge between the entrance hallway, the living area and the kitchen.

With its gently rounded corners, this central volume establishes a soft architectural rhythm that is echoed in a series of curved elements throughout the interior. Featuring a recessed alcove lined with a decorative veneer and a compact coffee station wrapped in dramatically veined black-and white marble, it also sets the tone for a palette that moves between warm timber surfaces and graphic accents. Nearby, oak cabinetry, again featuring softly curved edges is paired with worktops and a backsplash in pinkish Prada Gold granite, while vivid red switches punctuate the composition like precise graphic marks—a subtle nod to the owners’ profession. A curvaceous stainless-steel extractor casing, custom-designed by Marcin, playfully introduces an industrial note.

Undoubtedly, the scheme’s most striking element is the sculptural kitchen island. Supported by vivid orange cylindrical bases, the island’s body is wrapped in black veneer engraved with a swirling graphic pattern and topped with stone that echoes the kitchen surfaces. Overhead hangs Ingo Maurer’s inflatable Blow Me Up pendant lamp, an irreverent yet iconic design that offsets the solidity of the materials below.

In the adjacent seating area, a wall spanning bookcase provides both storage and visual rhythm. Undoubtedly, one of the most refined interior elements in the house, its lower section is crafted from walnut, its vertical divisions from tinted ash, and the drawer fronts from exotic bubinga wood. The composition accommodates the couple’s extensive book collection while discreetly concealing the television, maintaining the room’s calm visual order.

Even the compact ground floor bathroom becomes an exercise in spatial invention and playful material contrasts. Wrapped in an undulating wall of white vertical tiles, the windowless space is animated by burr wood veneer cabinetry, a mint-toned basin and red tap fittings, with a black and white stone flooring adding to the design’s zany flair.

Moving upstairs, the atmosphere gradually shifts toward a more centred sense of calm where oak surfaces define the bedroom and dressing area combined with soft textiles create a subdued retreat. The upstairs bathroom adopts an equally restrained palette with smoked-oak joinery, a textured glass shower screen shaped into a gentle arch, and a vintage wall lamp that casts a warm glow.

Rather than impose a singular stylistic rhythm, Agata and Przemek’s home unfolds as a sequence of contrasting moods: graphic yet intimate, playful yet composed. As Marcin describes it, the interior resembles “a conversation between personalities that differ yet resonate in harmony,” a fitting metaphor for a project born out of friendship and shared creative intuition.

Our first cultural institution in New York is a new addition to the New Museum next door to its iconic SANAA-designed building at 235 Bowery. The New Museum has been growing in visitors, exhibitions, and activities. Its diverse engagements, including its expansive education programs, its cultural incubator NEW INC, and, of course, its globally recognized exhibition program have been transforming the institution into a cultural laboratory. We were asked to add a new building that provides much needed space for its expanded activities and simultaneously reflects increasingly public ambitions—duplicating the program and square footage on a site immediately adjacent to the existing SANAA-designed building—part and counterpart, side-by-side.

This condition was entrenched in dichotomies. While dichotomies are inherent to museum expansions, they can suppress the full potential of the pair. We looked to less didactic, more unexpected, and maybe even romantically entangled relationships that could exist between two parts of a whole. Can one be highly infrastructural to give support and free agency to the other? Can it be two equal entities in complete harmony? Can the two be distinct and independent but reciprocal as a pair?

Our approach complements and respects the integrity of the adjoining SANAA building, while asserting its own distinct identity. The New Museum will be a synergistic pair working spatially and programmatically in tandem, offering a repertoire of spaces for the institution's curatorial ambitions and diverse programs. We stacked the required programs exactly at the same level of the existing building three floors of galleries, a permanent home for NEW INC, offices, and multifunctional education and event spaces—new and old conjoined. Ceiling heights of the newly connected galleries align on each floor, creating expanded space for exhibitions and horizontal flow between the buildings.

Galleries can be used singularly across the floorplate to host larger exhibitions or separately for diversity and curatorial freedom. Due to the horizontality of the site, the galleries in the new building increase in size on the upper levels while the galleries in the existing building decrease in size the total area per connected floor remains balanced. A distinction between the two buildings is created by taking advantage of our site's depth to insert an interstitial space, in between art and city, containing an Atrium Stair and dedicated gallery elevators for improved vertical circulation. This highly public face—starting from the exterior plaza and Atrium Stair to terraced multi-purpose rooms at the top—is a conduit of art and activities that provides an openness to engage the Bowery and the city.

The existing tower's verticality treats the different programs within in the same expression. We wanted to create a healthy contrast by expanding the galleries horizontally and introducing two setbacks. An angled setback starting from the top of gallery stack to the street defines a new public plaza at the terminus of Prince Street that becomes a focal point and a buffer zone between existing and new. Yumeshima, the site of the Expo, is a reclaimed island with inherently weak ground conditions. As a prerequisite for construction, a volume of soil equivalent to the weight of the proposed building had to be removed from the site.

Between them, the architects introduced a newly designed waterfall, making use of the site’s natural gradient. Visible from the living spaces of both buildings, the flow of water becomes at once focal point and ambient presence, folding sound, movement and reflection into the domestic routine.

The reconfiguration of the main house begins with the doma, an earthen floored passage that bisects the ground floor, linking the stone-paved entrance at the front to the landscaped garden at the rear. More than a corridor, it functions as a spatial hinge, separating everyday living areas from spaces intended for formal entertaining, while also operating as an atmospheric threshold. Washed aggregate underfoot extends seamlessly from the exterior approach, blurring the boundary between arrival and interior, while fusuma sliding panels featuring abstract geometric compositions by Noda Print Studio, acclaimed for their modern use of karakami hand-printing techniques, imbue the space with a muted graphic rhythm.

On one side of the passage, the original tatami rooms have been consolidated into a large reception hall intended for entertaining. On the other, a fluid living, dining and kitchen area opens onto the garden through floor-to-ceiling timber-framed sliding doors on two sides. When fully retracted, the space expands onto the engawa, a traditional Japanese covered veranda extending along the outer perimeter of a house, and into the garden. Additional rooms, separated by sliding partitions, can also be incorporated into the main space, allowing the house to contract or expand according to use. Meanwhile, upstairs, the bedrooms are conceived as spaces of retreat, framed by expansive views of the surrounding foliage.

Throughout the house, light, filtered through deep eaves and shoji screens, moves gently across surfaces, drawing out the quiet nuances of the material palette. Juraku plaster lends the walls and ceilings a velvety depth, softening and diffusing illumination, while hardwood floors, timber posts and beams, and wooden furnishings in their natural grain add warm tonal shifts. In dialogue with the verdant garden beyond, these materials do not frame the view so much as extend it inward, creating an interior atmosphere that feels quietly attuned to nature.

Conceived as a separate guest house, the annex includes a lounge that opens towards the main house along with three guest rooms distributed across two floors. Its ground floor sitting area unfolds directly onto the garden, reinforcing the spatial dialogue between the two buildings while inside, reclaimed timber beams and cherry wood are set against white-painted walls and ceilings, allowing material nuance to take precedence. Upstairs, in one of the guest suites, a hinoki bath connects seamlessly with the bedroom, turning bathing into a contemplative act oriented towards filtered light and seasonal change.

Rather than preserving the house as a historical artefact, kooo architects have extracted the spatial logic of Sukiya architecture, its calibrated thresholds, layered transparency and integration with landscape, adapting it to contemporary living. The result is a home that feels neither nostalgic nor overtly modern, but measured and enduring, grounded in a material clarity and an ongoing dialogue with its surroundings.
