Payne Designs ] Office in Fremantle

The brief for this job was to repurpose an existing warehouse and create an office space that reflects Fremantle and encourages a fun work culture amongst staff, whilst adhering to a modest construction budget. We also wanted the design to showcase Caporn Young as a progressive company who are doing things differently, this tends to be a pattern that we see with all our clients and it is very refreshing!

  • Architects: Payne Designs
  • Location: 19/21 Queen Victoria Street, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia
  • Area: 400.0 sqm
  • Project Year: 2015
  • Photographs: Dion Robeson

With the project located in the West End of Fremantle we drew inspiration from the port and the Fremantle aesthetic. We utilised a lot of raw and natural materials to mesh with the existing warehouse structure and reflect the youthful character of the company.

Some key materials include:

-The post consumer recycled cork that hugs the stair treads.
-The concrete looking cladding which is pre-finished requiring no maintenance or sealing.
-Locally sourced plywood.
-Using the existing slab.
-Exposed steel beams.
-The sea container which we modified to wrap around the reception.
