Building Facade Becomes Interior Lighting Motif

The current trends of suburban populations flocking back to urban centres has led to the inactivity of shopping malls, begging architects and designers to reinvent and revitalize them. Reggiani USA with California-based Giorgio Borruso Design conceived of an illuminating interior concept for Lord & Taylor at the brand's Ridge Hill, New York location.

The triangulated metal substructure of the building's undulating facade manifests as a motif within the store's interior as an installation of triangular frameworks suspended from six metre-tall ceilings and a central atrium. Embedded within the fixtures, a range of diverse lighting sources including LED, metal halide and fluorescent technologies illuminate the white showroom. The sharp angles of the frames stand in sharp contrast to the mushroom-shaped columns.

The equilateral sides of the modular units span 2.6 meters, allowing the fixtures to cover an adequate area and provide a variety of lighting types including accent, direct, diffused and indirect. Merchandise are rendered in quality illumination with high-efficiency optics which comply with energy consumption limits. White units are found within the retail spaces while the black pendants act as an elevated way-finding graphic, oriented to point towards escalators and pathways.
