every year, budapest-based art program hello wood constructs a christmas installation in hungary’s capital. this year, the studio utilized 365 traditional toboggans to build a 10.5 meter tall intricately geometric christmas tree at the entrance to the palace of arts along the danube river. erected in only one week, the structure consists of a 4.5 ton steel base and four timber frame sections creating the spine of the tree and the framework on which the sledge’s will be fixed. from the inside, the entire skeleton is revealed in an artful snowflake-like display, illuminated at night to emphasize its spirit.  the project goes beyond the immediate visual treat, however. as hello wood wanted to make a gift for the community, each of the toboggans will be donated to the SOS children’s village thanks in part to the financial support of hungarian telekom.
