Noise Disturbance? What’s that? For residents in the neighbourhood of Ijburg, Amsterdam, there’s no such thing as they actually enjoy the live music recordings that can be heard from the students who reside at the Amsterdam Conservatory’s dormitory. What is more is that the art project titled Home Recording actually enables students to break down the walls of their dormitory and share their melodies with their neighbours, their relatives back home, as well as everyone else around the world!

The inspirational, ground breaking studio that makes all of this happen, is made up of an 18-square meter apartment divided into three sections with different functions – sound booth, meeting and audience space. Jonas Samson’s thoughtful design makes no functional sacrifices within the small space where the red studio foam covered sound booth increases the acoustics and the meeting space offers students of the conservatory the chance to interact with the local community as it provides a space where they can provide music lessons to children from the neighbourhood. Meanwhile, the audience space provides for a laid back environment with two vintage Rietveld armchairs.

The dormitory a.k.a. as The Home, houses the sixty-nine international students who reside in the Ijburg neighbourhood which is predominantly made up of young families and urban professionals. Although these young musical talents and the airing of their melodies may seem somewhat of an incongruity with a peaceful neighbourhood, the dormitory’s neighbours seem to enjoy the live music recordings. They don’t see them as a form of noise disturbance, but more a hedonistic game where they actually look forward to the red REC button lighting up on the building’s façade - signifying that a student is transmitting live. Almost like a form of an interactive urban environment, this art installation provides a childlike playfulness with serious intelligence and insight which takes its inspiration from the iconic ON AIR red studio light and is almost reminiscent of the golden days of the music industry and radio where live recordings were held in studios for months.

In order to record and stream live, all the student has to do is head towards the fully equipped, low-tech recording booth, make the necessary control panel adjustments and once ready, swipe the fog key to record live. And it doesn’t stop there. The art project is available for everyone. Almost like Big Brother, anyone may live stream the recording studio through the Home Recording’s Official Website, or follow live recordings on Facebook and Twitter.  And for those of you who don’t want to lose out on a single note? All home recordings are stored in an online archive on the project’s website... So let the music play and just dance the night away!
