*비엠 더블유 뉴 제너레이션 일렉트로닉 컨셉카 BMW Unveils Breakthrough i3 and i8 Electric Vehicles

비엠더블유의 새로운 야심작,
아이3과 아이8을 소개한다.
친환경 일렉트로닉 시티카를 목표로 발표한 두종류의
컨셉카는 비엠더블유의 지속가능한 환경과 퍼포먼스의 목표를 엿볼 수 있다.
먼저, 비엠더블유 고성능 슈퍼카의 계보를 잇는
아이8은 349마력을 내는 가솔린 엔진(3.0리터의 6실린더)을
겸용으로 사용하는 하이브리는 컨셉카로
시속 60마일의 속도를 4.6초만에 도달한다.
여기에 카본파이어를 바디로 사용하여
1리터로 22마일 운행이 가능하여 졌다.

비엠더블유의 새로운 도전을 보여주는 아이3은
소형 시티카의 새로운 패러다임을 제안한다.
파워트레인 계통을 전부 일렉트로닉 시스템으로
계획하여 진정한 전기자동차로써의 첫발을 내딛는다.
그러게 위해서는 배터리 성능이 중요한데.
배터리 완충후 98마일 운행이 가능하며, 한시간이내에
80%정도가 충전이 가능하다.(급속충전)
여기에 전기자동차의 교본으로 불리우는 닛산 리프와 비교해도
월등한 스펙을 자랑한다.
카본파이어의 사용으로 600파운드 이상 가벼우며,
2피트 정도 짧아 좁은 도심내에서도 기동성있게 움직일 수 있다.

몇년이 걸릴지는 모르지만 향후 자동차의
에너지원에 대한 패러다임은 변화 할 것이다.
그리고 그것은 지금껏 디자인되고 설계되었던
자동차의 개념하고는 전혀 상이한 새로운 공간과 형태를
만들어 낼 것이다.
내연기관보다 먼저 개발 되었지만 지금에서야
실용화를 눈에 앞두고 있는 전기자동차는
우리가 앞으로 지향해야될 목표가 아닐까 싶다.

BMW just raised the stakes for electric vehicles by unveiling its new i Series concept cars. The runabout all-electric i3 is to debut in 2013, followed by the sporty i8 hybrid in 2014. Both 4-seaters push the boundaries of design and technology with advanced drivetrains and breakthrough carbon fiber bodies that shave weight to improve performance and mileage. Marking a milestone in the company’s vaunted lineup, the new cars will be exceptionally miserly on energy, but maintain a high performance credo. The more conventional i8 will have a 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine with a parallel electric motor to provide 349 horsepower. Using lightweight carbon fiber, the reduced weight allows the car to reach 60mph in a numbing 4.6 second. The technology however still allows for a frugal 78 mpg – assuming you’re not a lead foot. The car can also go 22 miles running just on its electric motor, much like the Chevy Volt.

The i3 is even more unique. Built on an all-electric powertrain for an urban environment, the car can go 98 miles with full batteries, and can charge up 80% in an hour. The curb weight comes in at 600 pounds less than the Nissan Leaf, given its carbon fiber body, and a full 2 feet shorter to help navigate the urban maze. The i3 is the first production car in the world to use carbon fiber technology at this level. Powered by a 125kW electric motor the car can do 0-60mph in a respectable 7.9 seconds.

Carbon fiber components combined with advanced drivetrains were first proposed in the early 1990s by the Rocky Mountain Institute as the “Supercar”, and was essentially ignored by the industry due to low gasoline prices.
