Avanto Architects ] Chapel of St. Lawrence

Late last year, Finnish firm Avanto Architects completed the Chapel of St. Lawrence in Vantaa after winning a competition to refurbish the church in 2003.

The St. Lawrence site retains the original stone bell tower, which both contrasts and provides frame of reference for the snowy-white, lightly plastered masonry walls of the new chapel with its roof of patina-ed copper.

The theme of Avanto’s proposal revolves around polku, or “path,” specifically man’s journey from mortality to eternity. Here, “courtyards function as passages to further ceremonial stages, a wall turns the onlookers’ gaze towards the light, a space gives reassurance to mourners.”

“Giving peace and dignity to the funeral ceremony” was the focus in planning the building flow, and movement from one room to another is highlighted with a change of lighting and spatial characteristics.

The architects achieved a uniform vision by designing everything including interiors, furniture, artifacts and textiles, right down to the cladding for the organs (!).

The wall towards the graveyard is semi transparent, glazed with a patinated copper mesh on either side, a screen between this life and the hereafter.
