Miralles Tagliabue ] Camper Shop

From Hermès in Paris to Mulberry in London, retail stores these days are not only inventive with their offerings, they’re also revving up the design quotient for their spaces. Opened last year, the shoe company Camper’s stylish shop in Sevilla, Spain, was designed by the hip Barcelona-based architecture firm Miralles Tagliabue.

Inspired by the silhouettes of shoes and their curvilinear forms, the firm created a number of undulating showcases—from the long bench-like structures to the dividers between the display shelving—to add texture to the walls and the overall space.

The MirallesTagliabue team also visited the Camper headquarters in Majorca to witness first-hand the shoemaking process and how one piece of leather can be sculpted into a three-dimensional object. The trip thus subsequently influenced the free-form shapes that dominate the store.

The main material used in the space consists of MDF boards that have been cut to shape, which were then paired with a series of reflective surfaces that resemble the distorted mirrors seen in amusement parks. The shoes are displayed accordingly on top of these gently uneven structures—some of which look as if they are floating just slightly above the floor—giving the space a thoroughly retro vibe.

Overhead light fixtures that appear almost snakelike with their exposed wiring reiterate the theme of curves throughout the store.
